Horikoshi recently revealed in an interview published in Jump Giga that he has already decided on how My Hero Academia will end.
Of course, knowing Horikoshi, it’ll be an ending none of us saw coming! No one knows what he has planned, and all we can do is wait and watch as the story unfolds. Surely he has some surprises in store for us all!
Lately, there’s been speculation among fans whether one of Horiskoshi’s surprises could be Midoriya’s death. Far-fetched as it may sound, it would be a real shocker.
Midoriya is not going to die. It is unlikely since he’s the protagonist and the narrator of the story. He is destined to be the next Symbol of Peace. However, Midoriya could suffer from the same lifespan-shortening effects of One For All, like the fourth user Shinomori from using 7 other quirks.
The story of My Hero Academia is narrated by Midoriya right from Chapter 1. At the beginning itself, Midoriya tells us that this is the story of how he became a great hero. Dead men tell no tales, now do they?
Ever since All Might retired, it’s been clear that Midoriya’s destiny is to follow in his footsteps– to master One For All and become the next Symbol of Peace.
Midoriya’s plot armor as the main character is nearly impenetrable. His death would quite literally mean the end of the series itself. It would also leave several loose ends– who would take All Might’s place as the Symbol of Peace? Would One For All simply die with Midoriya?
Besides, main character deaths are a very rare trope in shonen anime and manga. Fans would be devastated to have to bid Midoriya goodbye after growing attached to the endearing little gremlin over the years.
1. Does One For All Kill Its Users?
Midoriya might not outright die just yet though he could still end up not living a very long life. Midoriya’s body still isn’t strong enough to use 100% of One For All. Using 100% of his power has left him mortally wounded in the past and threatened to handicap him. Using 7 other quirks could also take a toll on his body and shorten his lifespan.
Shinomori Hikage, the fourth user of One For All, revealed in Chapter 304 that he died of old age at just forty. After All Might, Shinomori held One For All the longest– 18 whole years. During this time, One For All burned away his lifeforce and finally broke his body during the last year. In contrast, All Might held the quirk for nearly 40 years without any adverse effects because he was quirkless like Midoriya. Being quirkless makes both of them perfect vessels able to hold the full extent of One For All without another quirk taking up space.
That being said, All Might never had access to the previous users’ quirks because One For All hadn’t matured then. The very core of One For All has grown since then and given Midoriya access to 7 other quirks. Despite being a perfect vessel, using the 7 other quirks of the previous users could take a toll on Midoriya’s body.
2. Will Deku Die In Season 5?
There’s also been deliberation among fans about whether Midoriya will die in Season 5 itself– making it the finale season.
Season 5 will likely cover upto Chapter 190 to Chapter 240 of the manga. Since these chapters cover the Joint Training Arc and the Meta Liberation Army Arc, Midoriya will not die in Season 5.
