Thorfinn realizes there is no convincing him anymore and walks away with his parting words leaving Canute amused and admiring a man like Thorfinn. The world that the King envisions helps many and oppresses few, and Thorfinn aspires to create a world that helps the ones who can’t live in the world of the King.
However, as the night approaches, Thorgil finds the enemy camps completely abandoned and the ships gone. Canute sails away from the farm, moved by his old friend’s words and pledging to withdraw from seizing any more farms and even reduce the size of his army in England. The uprising they feared never came, as people realized his trust in them and did not want to betray him.
Walking up the empty farm, Thorfinn comes across Einar at Arnheid’s grave, paying his respects. He reassures him that he’s healed now, and they once more talk about the land beyond the sea, a place of peace and non-violence where everyone can live in happiness, Vinland. Even if it doesn’t exist somewhere, Thorfinn will make one himself.
As they prepare to leave the farm, Thorfinn says his farewells to all the people who have changed him as well as received his influence. Olmar, Snake, and Sverkel watch as they sail away, and they have plenty of words to say, but all they can do is smile in a bittersweet peace, glad that things ended as they did.
Pater takes responsibility for protecting Arnheid’s grave and sits by it many times, discussing the world that Thorfinn will create. With the people starting to slowly believe in the peace that can be made, others like Thorgil remain stuck in the ways of violence, an inherent trait in humanity.
