The war on Ketil’s farm ends with the apparent conclusion, while the commander still stands atop his horse in denial in episode 20 of Vinland Saga season 2 titled “Pain.”
With the Jomsvikings cutting down their men without hesitation, rejoicing in the bloodshed, and enjoying the deaths of the poor, Owl finally shouts at the men to retreat. The morale of these men has already dropped much too low to care.
Thorgil’s assassination plan was the only chance they had at winning. However, it is thwarted by Canute partly by luck and with improved swordsmanship. Buying enough time for Wulf to come back, Thorgil’s plan is foiled.

Thorgil’s plan was utterly foiled since he could not anticipate how tricky Canute could be and was forced to flee back into the waters. However, the focus now is on Thorfinn as he walks back to Canute and prepares to force himself through the hundred men if needed.
Knowing that Canute will continue further into the plan to capture or kill Ketil, he wants to prevent further violence if possible. The next episode will have their reunion finally shown, and it may even end with Thorfinn joining Canute on his journey.

Owl thinks of his life, where he has killed thirteen people with no regrets. He has enjoyed watching their faces the moments before their death, and because of this, he can see the pure joy in his opponent’s faces while they kill them all with ease.
Snake steps in as the only one who can match the opponent’s strength, and Owl screams to retreat. Completely ignoring their commander Ketil, everybody runs back immediately, immensely relieved that they no longer have to fight the unbeatable foe. Amidst the chaos of the retreat, Ketil is attacked from the back.
Canute orders the guard captain, telling the Jomsvikings not to chase after the fleeing men and to treat all the bodies carefully. As his right-hand man walks away from Floki, Thorgil finds his opening to sprint toward the king from behind, intending to kill swiftly.
Luckily for Canute, he notices the attack at the last second and blocks his swing, which ultimately breaks his sword and sprains his arm. However, he buys time by throwing his robe onto Thorgil and then tries to run for a new blade but is kicked to the floor.
Right before Thorgil lands the final slash, Wulf makes it back just in time and tackles the beast of a man. Keeping him down and stalling long enough for the rest of the king’s guard to arrive, Thorgil takes off, sprinting back into the waters.
Arnheid wakes up to the sound of the violence and understands what is happening. She asks where they can go now, and Leif suggests his village. In reply, she questions if there are slaves and wars, which there naturally are at this time. Refusing to go to a place like that, she decides to go where Gardar is instead.
In a world like this, she finds no purpose to live anymore and goes unresponsive. Thorfinn desperately tries to bring her back, and Einar screams at her to come back, but she has left for a happier place. Talking to her body, he speaks of Vinland once more, a place of freedom.
Snake brings back an injured Ketil, and Einar gets up in his rage, trying to kill the master but is brought back to reality with a punch from Thorfinn. Now filled with a new purpose in life, Thors’ son walks to Canute to prevent more deaths in this cycle of violence.
