With a flawless narrative and good animation quality, the series had shocked the whole anime industry. Episode 978 has set out to achieve back all the lost popularity with a single blow.

One Piece had received its fair share of criticism regarding the anime’s quality, but not anymore.

The main reason for this could be attributed to the long-running nature of the show. While not always at its best, the series remained reasonably average in animation while bowling over fans from time to time with its plot.

With the start of the Wano Arc, though, this all changed. The clean and visually stunning art style and animation surprised its fans.

From everything in the story to commercial break cutscenes, everything was beautifully animated. Episode 978 was everything that, but on steroids.

Episode 978 of the One Piece anime featured Luffy, Law, and Kidd face off against Kaido’s battleships. The choreography of the fight scene was excellent, but the animation was otherworldly.

Everything from Law flipping the ship upside down, Kidd transforming his arm to Luffy’s Gear Four: Bounce Man transformation was amazing. It seems like Toei had been saving their best for this episode.

The use of 3D CGI in Kidd’s arms might have flown past many of the viewers. The blending of the old school and the new CG style animation is almost seamless in the scene. This type of integration is probably the best of its kind.

The 15-second sequence where Luffy grabs the mast while the ship moves mid-air is probably the best-animated part of the episode. The constant camera angles changes to the details to convey relative motion were perfect.

The animation quality in this episode is reminiscent of a Toei movie rather than a long-running shonen. With this rise in quality, one can only dream of what is about to come, especially those who know what is happening in the manga.

While the fans are busy freaking out over this one, you cannot look away from the story. Why did Kyo destroy his ally’s ship? What is he thinking? Are we in for another betrayal?
