Suzume is a modern action adventure road movie where a 17-year-old girl named Suzume assists a strange young man in closing exterior portals that are spewing calamities all around Japan.
Suzume is directed and was written during the lockdown by Shinkai, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Makoto Shinkai’s films exhibit a command of locales and a passionate perfectionism, and his new work, “Suzume,” is just another addition to his masterpieces.
Suzume continues to break milestones for director Makoto Shinkai with the official Twitter account for the anime film announcing that it is the third film in a row for the director to pass 10 million tickets sold in Japan, a massive milestone for any director on its own, let alone three times in a row.
