The very next flashback delves into Enji and Rei’s marriage, which was a deliberate arrangement from the hero, a “quirk marriage,” as he referred to it, in which he only wished to produce offspring capable of wielding his flame quirk and Rei’s freeze quirk with enough perfection to surpass number one hero, All Might.

Rei had little option but to follow her family’s wishes, and she finally married Endeavor and had Dabi. While he shared his father’s fire and devotion, Dabi inherited his mother’s tolerance, which was low, while having a flame quirk stronger than his father’s.

This would result in Enji forbidding Dabi from using his flame quirk in the future. Meanwhile, the weight of this “failure” would rest on Rei, who would have to give birth to another kid, and then another, until she ended up with the youngest — Shoto.

Rei had been reduced to a shell of a person by the time Shoto was born, having been gradually stripped of her motherhood as her purpose had been reduced to a birthing machine.

Rei couldn’t take care of herself, let alone her children, in her environment. Except for Shoto, all the kids were left to play among themselves while their younger sibling had to face undesired hard training.

Meanwhile, Dabi’s fixation with demonstrating to his father his progress with the flame quirk became insane. This would eventually lead to him burning himself in the mountains, which everyone else would assume was the cause of Dabi’s death.

In the present, Rei encourages Endeavor not to bear the shame of terrible parenting alone, as each family member acknowledges their involvement in pushing Dabi to the point where he is now, for a variety of reasons.

Hawks and Jeanist enter the room after eavesdropping on their chats as the family prepares for the storm ahead and to maintain appearances in the middle of a total public fallout.
