The position of the hero immediately commands a sense of respect and fascination amongst the residents of the hero society in the past. It was the newfound appreciation for the role when All Might almost singlehandedly pulled society from the dark ages.

Despite all that, the meaning of being a “hero” changed as time went on. In times of peace, many heroes just assume the role for the perks that come with it rather than any real sense of duty. Being a hero, just became a job.

As we see in the chapter, the residents of this hero society did not help the cause either. The legend of All Might made him just a crucial piece in the machine of society rather than a human. His role is to save people from everything, regardless of anything else.

This twisted sense of what a hero is in the minds of the people is what is really responsible for the downfall of the current hero society. The soul of being a hero was necessary just for a hero and not for them.

It also allowed them to put the blame on the real “heroes” who did not quit their role even in these tough times. Hero society as a whole failed to recognize its own faults when it had someone to point the finger to.

About My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero manga series written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. It has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 2014, with its chapters additionally collected in 24 tankōbon volumes as of August 2019.

It follows a quirkless boy Izuku Midoriya and how he backed the greatest Hero alive. Midoriya, a boy who has been admiring heroes and their ventures since the day he was born, came into this world without a quirk.
