Shin answers Kanpishi’s question in the most unexpected way in chapter 759 of Kingdom, titled “Contradictory King.”

Yet another great chapter with lots of philosophy and some interesting theories. Just as speculated, Kai Oku interfered with the conversation between Shin and Kanpishi, getting angry at Kanpishi for calling Qin filth.

However, he couldn’t take the conversation in his hand as Kanpishi directed it back to Shin. Hesitant at first, Shin gets more and more involved in the conversation as the chapter goes on and finally provides an answer that was unexpected for the other but can be expected from him.

Kanpishi asks the same question to Shin again. However, before Shin can say anything, Kai Oku interferes and furiously calls out Kanpishi for making a protector a part of the negotiation, disrespecting the high commissioner.

Along with that, he is also angry about his calling the State of Qin cursed. Kanpishi happily agrees and adds to that by the claim that a dog’s feces look clean compared to Qin.

Kai Oku gets even more furious and threatens the king with the declaration of war. Kanpishi tells him not to be so simple-minded as he is someone who represents a powerful state.

This calms Kai Oku down, and he asks Kanpishi the reason for calling Qin filth. Kanpishi calls Qin a greedy nation that sheds blood and captures those who oppose them. It is like a wild animal.

Shin yells out, saying that Sei doesn’t want any of that (he calls king “Sei” in front of everyone, leaving them shocked). He tells everyone that their purpose is to untie all nations and end the era of war.

This causes a major commotion in the court, with everyone calling them hypocrites, and Shin is considered to be stupid. Kanpishi adds to his accusations by claiming that Qin suffers from “contradiction.”  

He says that, on the one hand, he kills and captures other nations; on the other, he wants to establish legalism in his nation. From what it looks like, Sei follows the theory of innate goodness.

However, legalism is based on the theory of innate badness. Thus, the mixture of the two will cause an imbalance. Hence, he asks Shin again what theory his king believes in.

Shin tells him he can’t know what is going on in Sei’s head and can’t answer his question. Kanpishi wants to hear his opinion because he has been a close friend of Sei and has been in countless battles (unlike him).

So, Kanpishi wants to hear his opinion. Shin asks what is the meaning of bad. He further adds to it by asking whether Kanki was bad or not. He falls into a state of confusion where he wonders what can be really termed as “bad.”

He tells Kanpishi the concept of good and bad change with perspective and changing environment, and on the battlefield, this distinction between good and bad ceases to exist.

Kanpishi gets intrigued by Shin and tells him that this was the kind of discussion he wanted to have with him. However, he still wonders that given the world Shin just described, what is the “innate nature of humanity.”

Shin gets hesitant, claiming not to know the answer. However, Tou comes in and tells him to say whatever comes to his mind without thinking about right or wrong.

Shin replies that the innate nature of humans is “fire.” Leaving everyone confused.
