This quarantine season has proved to be quite profitable for streaming sites. And the competition is only getting more intense as new streaming sites are coming up.
HBO Max, an American on-demand video streaming site, is trying to compete with Netflix, the streaming giant. From the looks of it, HBO Max is trying to please the otakus amongst us as well.
HBO Max seems to have made an agreement with Crunchyroll, and some of Crunchyroll’s series can be streamed on the site. Of course, it is a lot better to subscribe to Crunchyroll for long time fans, but for those who already have access to HBO Max and are interested in trying out anime, this might be the perfect opportunity.
HBO Max offers some mind-blowing anime series as well as 21 out of the 22 Ghibli movies.
The Ghibli movie archive :
This is no doubt a big step towards the popularization of the site. All the studio Ghibli films are currently available on HBO Max except for Grave of the Fireflies (due to problems regarding film distribution rights).
These films are loved by people of all ages, and some deal with quite critical social issues. From the cute Ponyo and From up on Poppy Hill to grave ones like Princess Mononoke, there is no way anyone would dislike these films (not to mention the art style which was way ahead of its time).
The anime which are currently available on HBO Max are:
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Your Lie in April
- Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World
- Keep Your Hands off Eizouken!
- Rurouni Kenshin
- KONOSUBA – God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!
- Bungo Stray Dogs
- Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers
- The Testament of Sister New Devil
- 91 Days
- Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Let’s hope more major anime series will be added to the catalogue in the future.
Here is a list of some shows (except anime) to watch on the streaming site, this quarantine season :
