Can Uraraka’s Quirk Evolve? Can She Make Things Heavier Or Make Water Float?

Class 1-A has made a comeback when we least expected it! Finally, after fourteen chapters which seemed like an eternity, it seems we’ll be seeing more of our favorite young heroes, including everyone’s favorite girl Uraraka!

Uraraka’s quirk is honestly one of the most underappreciated. That being partly because Uraraka’s character itself has been underutilized– which is disappointing, to say the least.

With a quirk that can manipulate one of the central forces of the universe, Uraraka could be a game-changer in any battle! Unfortunately, we haven’t seen much growth out of her since the Sports Festival Arc at the beginning of the series.

Since then, she hasn’t contributed much of note to the story but don’t lose hope just yet! Horikoshi revealed in an interview with Jump Giga in April 2021 that Uraraka— you heard that right!— together with Hawks, will be getting the spotlight in the Final Arc.

In Horikoshi’s own words, Hawks and Uraraka will be a ‘light of hope.’ As it stands, I don’t see how Uraraka could contribute to a battle to such an effect.

Zero Gravity has a lot of nerfs, and Uraraka would surely have to undergo some growth before her big moment.

But is it possible for Uraraka to awaken a new part of her quirk?

Toga and Geten, another member of the Paranormal Liberation Front, have proved that one’s quirk can evolve, and one can find new applications. So I don’t see why the same couldn’t be true for Uraraka!

The possibilities for evolution with Zero Gravity are endless! The most viable way for the quirk to evolve would be general gravity manipulation– being able to negate as well as increase the effects of gravity.

Being able to remotely or telekinetically activate her quirk after touching an object would also be a huge plus. Creating a zero-gravity or high-gravity zone or bubble seems improbable since it’s a little overpowered but would be super cool nonetheless!

1. Can Uraraka Make Things Heavier?

Uraraka cannot make things heavier. As the name of the quirk implies, Zero Gravity can presently only negate the force of gravity on an object.

General gravity manipulation would be a massive powerup for Uraraka, but it might be a bit much for a first-year student.

However, we can’t rule out the possibility just yet. Uraraka can always change the name of her quirk, so I hope it’ll be explored in a future chapter, if at all.

Being able to make things heavy by manipulating gravity isn’t an ability to be sneezed at. Uraraka could quite literally create a black hole if the power went unchecked.

Being able to manipulate gravity so freely would be a devastating skill in a battle. It would give her an easy way to restrain a villain too massive or destructive for her to take down.

Granted, she can still restrain an opponent by making them float, but that still leaves her vulnerable to long-range attacks.

On the other hand, if she could increase the gravity acting on an opponent, they’d be crushed face-to-the-ground by the weight and wouldn’t be able to move a finger.

She could also slow down a particularly fast or powerful villain. A fast opponent wouldn’t be able to move as swiftly anymore, and a heavy-hitter would also find their attacks slowed.

If Uraraka could create a high gravity zone around an opponent, an attack like the one she tried to use against Bakugo during the sports festival would be fatal!

Another possibility is throwing, say, a light rock at an opponent and making it heavier just as it hits its mark.

Uraraka could perform a gesture to remotely activate the technique that makes objects heavier after she has touched them– similar to how she currently releases her technique by touching both of her hands’ fingertips together.

Uraraka could cause some severe damage and definitely break a few bones with this technique! Imagine her using this technique in combination with Class B’s Shoda and his Twin Impact quirk!

Uraraka could even focus on being a full-combat hero rather than taking the rescue and clean-up route.

2. Can Uraraka Make Water Float?

Zero Gravity’s biggest drawback is that it’s isn’t activated telekinetically. Uraraka has to touch an object with all of her fingertips on either hand for the quirk to activate.

This condition instantly rules out objects too small for all her fingertips to touch at once, like sand and water.

While it would be cool, Uraraka cannot make water float. Unlike solid objects, water lacks strong molecular bonds. Uraraka can’t touch a single microscopic water molecule with all of her fingertips at once.

She wouldn’t be able to make a typical mass of water float unless it were in gel form.

Logicality aside, here’s how I imagine Uraraka could make water float– If she could create a zero-gravity pocket and encompass water with it, she could make a considerable chunk of water float.

Better yet, if her quirk evolved to let her manipulate gravity telekinetically, i.e., without needing to rely on touch, she’d have no issue at all controlling each water molecule.

The usefulness of this technique, however, would depend on how much water she can make float. She could trap an opponent in a water pocket till they pass out or use it to plain startle them for a moment.

With the ability to manipulate gravity in general, she could sneak a huge chunk of water over an opponent and increase its gravity while hitting them with it.

Depending on the distance, velocity, amount of water, and the shape of the projectile (it would just end up as rain otherwise!), the impact would be similar to being hit by concrete. However, it would take fine control over her quirk– something we haven’t seen much of from Uraraka.
