British Financial Drama Industry Premieres on HBO

A new British drama has arrived on HBO and HBO Max. Industry, a BBC Two drama about young bankers in a competitive world, has premiered on HBO on November 9th, 2020. The first episode of the new series has been met with mixed reviews. It remains to be seen if the show can pull up its socks over the next few episodes, which are scheduled to air every week from November to December.

The first episode introduces the protagonist of the series, Harper Stern, an African-American woman who gets hired by Piermont and Co., an esteemed investment bank in London. In the dog-eat-dog world of banking, every employee just wants to make it to RIF (Reduction in Force) Day, when several of these employees will be let go.

The next episodes will see the rookie bankers deal with the consequences of the greatest economic crisis in recent times- the 2008 financial depression.

Industry shows everything that 20-somethings might face when transitioning from students to bill-paying adults- drug abuse, intimacy issues and constant self-doubt.

However, some have criticized the show’s dialogues by saying it gets slightly dull because of the financial jargon that viewers might not relate to.

The pilot has been directed by Lena Dunham, the mind behind the Emmy award-nominated series Girls.

Industry stars My’hala Herrold, Marisa Abela, Harry Lawtey, Freya Mavor, and David Jonsson.

It airs on HBO every Sunday and is available to stream on HBO Max.
