Banana Split is set during that phase of the student life when school has ended, and college is about to start. It is the time when friendships are either deepened or forgotten, and new adventures take place.

The movie that is shot beautifully takes you back to those times and gives you the same sense that everything ends, and you need to take it all in.

I. Plot                                  

The movie starts with a quick montage that shows us how the It high school couple- April and Nick met, flirted and made out. The film shows us their fast and heady romance, which lasted over two years and is now tethering on the brink of collapse because they are going to different colleges.

April is going to Boston University, and Nick is going to school locally in California. He is hurt that April is going away and eventually starts dating another girl named Carla. April and Nick don’t breakup formally, and April finds out the hard way when she sees Nick posting pictures with Carla on Instagram.

She is hurt and broken-hearted and starts stalking Carla, following her activities and the life of this girl who is new in town. When the two girls run into each other at a house party, April is determined to ignore and hate Nick’s new girlfriend. But, over shots and karaoke, the two girls discover that they have more in common than a boyfriend.

April realizes that Carla, who has moved to LA from Fresno, is the only girl who matches her. The two have a lot of shared interests, and they quickly go from being friends to best friends. They decide to deal with Nick in the simplest way possible and choose to ignore him and focus on their friendship.

The two put a lid on the eventual emotional outburst bound to happen as Carla, and Nick’s relationship deepens. April feels left out This unlikely friendship between an ex, and a current girlfriend is at the core of Banana Split.

II. Cast & Characters

Hannah Marks and Liana Liberato give splendid performances and do justice with the script. The movie knows that an eventual outburst is bound to happen but gives them enough to develop multi-dimensional characters who enjoy being in each other’s company.

While Nick’s relationship with Clara is a constant thorn in April’s side, she finds Clara to be a breath of fresh air. Together the both of them match each other’s snarky and witty attitude, and in those days before college starts, they try to live their life to the fullest.

Banana Split shows you how the bond of friendship is so strong that, in a way, the girls are cheating on Nick with each other.

Dylan Sprouse is the latest male idol on whom girls are gushing over worldwide. He has chemistry with both April and Clara and is not made out to be the villain of the story. The writers treat the characters as just adults on their way to college, which gives a genuine heart to the film and the cast’s performances.

III. Visuals

The film is shot beautifully, capturing the Californian visuals for a cinematic treat on the big screen. Director Benjamin Kasulke has managed to pull a complex story with bright colors on screen. They remind you about the carefree attitude and adventurous phase of life before college.
