Bandai Namco Unveils ‘SAND LAND’ RPG Adaptation Before Film’s Release

Akira Toriyama’s ‘Sand Land’ was not as popular as ‘Dr. Slump’ and ‘Dragon Ball’. The manga was just a single volume with 14 chapters. However, if you have observed his art, looking at the trailer of ‘Sand Land’ is enough to guess that it is Toriyama’s work.

The manga gained buzz once again since the announcement of an anime film adaptation. Interestingly, this is not the only thing that is going to arrive.

On Thursday, Bandai Namco Entertainment announced an action RPG game adaptation of ‘Sand Land’ at the Summer Gate Fest stream. It is being developed by ILCA for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Moreover, the game will use Unreal Engine 5.

The video shows the various locations of the desert wasteland, where the series is set. Then we get the first look at Rao, followed by Beelzebub and other characters. You also get a peek at the gameplay, where Beelzebub can be seen driving different vehicles – a tank, a truck, reptiles, and more.

The vehicles also have weapons, allowing the player to fight while riding. Beelzebub also fights with his bare hands and magical abilities.

As of now, no release date has been revealed by Bandai Namco, but we can expect it to arrive in 2024. From the gameplay footage, the release date should not be too far from the film’s release date.

I wonder why ‘Sand Land’, a two-decade-old manga was suddenly chosen for a mixed-media project. It was a great choice, but I am curious about what led to it. Overall, a game adaptation will provide an immersive experience for anyone interested in it, which would last longer for a short manga.

About SAND LAND

‘SAND LAND’ is a short manga series by Akira Toriyama. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from May to August 2000 and was collected into one tankōbon volume in November 2000 by Shueisha.

A CGI anime film adaptation was released in August 2023, and an original net animation (ONA) series will be streamed worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu in Q2 2024. An action role-playing video game developed by ILCA and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment is set to be released in April 2024.

The story is set in a war-torn future where only a barren wasteland is left and a greedy king controls the water supply. It follows the demon king’s son Beelzebub, his assistant Thief, and Sheriff Rao on a quest to find a long-lost river. The trio encounters many foes on their adventurous journey, including the greedy king’s army.
