Zendaya is officially returning to the MCU

A few weeks ago we got the news of Tom Holland's Spider-Man returning to the MCU. Updates about the rest of the cast were still unconfirmed. Zendaya is officially returning to the MCU and will reprise her role as Michelle Jones or MJ in Spider-Man 3 confirmed by Hollywood Reporter.

The character of MJ appeared first in the Spider-Man: Homecoming, where she became friends with Ned Leeds and Peter Parker. After the events of Avengers: Infinity War, most of Peter's friend including MJ and Ned disappeared due to effects of Thanos'sus snap.

Post the blip event in Avengers: Endgame, Peter wants to spend one summer being a kid, and he makes detailed plans to confess his growing feelings for MJ during the Europe trip in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The friendship soon sprouted into young romance during the trip and MJ is one of the people that is aware of Peter's real Identity. Fans are excited to see their relationship in the next Spider-Man movie. Given how things left off between them though, what will happen next is anyone's guess.

Spider-Man's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Sony and Disney have negotiated two more movies for Spider-Man in the MCU. However, only one of the movies is confirmed for now. Marvel and Disney will produce Spider-Man 3 for which the release date is July 16, 2021. After this Tom Holland will appear in a team-up movie which will be his last outing as Spider-Man in the MCU. The deal is only for two Spider-Man films so that audiences are not confused over the sudden exit of a character.

According to ComicBook.com, this won't be Holland's last outing as Spidey, just that the film will help wrap up his adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the outlet explains:

This could allow these characters to continue in their franchise separate from the MCU, without having the sudden and jarring disconnect established by events like the Blip from Avengers: Endgame and J. Jonah Jameson's outing in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

To much delight, Zendaya and Spider-Man are returning while the confirmation about the other cast members is still pending. We are not sure about the future of Spider-Man in the MCU after Spider-Man 3, but now Marvel has the opportunity to bid Spider-Man a proper farewell.
