The Spirits in Black Clover are still an enigma! No one knows their exact origins or true purpose, and one of the spirits hasn’t even been revealed yet! Undeniably spirit magic users are some of the strongest and most skilled with their magic.
Since Asta’s anti-magic has been a mystery for much of the series, it wasn’t a far stretch to wonder if he could also use spirit magic. It would certainly make his powers an interesting mix of Yin-and-Yang, don’t you think?
Asta does not have a spirit and will not get one since he has no mana. Spirits use magic and choose wizards with similar magic. Asta’s anti-magic rivals any spirit magic. He doesn’t need a spirit.
1. What Are Spirits?
Four major elemental spirits exist within the Black Clover universe. Three of these have been revealed so far– Salamander the fire spirit, Sylph the wind spirit, and Undine the water spirit.
The earth spirit is yet to be revealed. Many fans believe the earth spirit will likely be a Gnome.
These elemental spirits form bonds with mages they deem worthy and can increase the mage’s power.
Spirits are free to change their allegiance and choose another mage at any time though they can only bond with one at a time. They can also crumble away if their master dies.
It’s considered an honor to be chosen by a spirit. Salamander is currently with Fuegoleon while Sylph is with Yuno, and Undine is with Lolopechka.
Having access to spirit magic is a massive power-up since spirits themselves have considerable magic power.
I. Is There A Fifth Spirit?
Speculation about the existence of a fifth spirit stems from the Spirit Guardians of the Heart Kingdom. Chapter 228 revealed that the Spirit Guardians are the strongest mages of the Heart Kingdom who use the power of natural mana.
Since there are five Spirit Guardians in the Heart Kingdom, hinting at the existence of a fifth spirit. Since the fifth Spirit Guardian, Gadja, uses lightning magic, the fifth spirit could be a lightning spirit.
II. Is Nero A Spirit?
Many fans have speculated that Nero could be an anti-magic spirit for the longest time since she always follows Asta around and can find the magic stones.
However, Nero is not a spirit. Nero was revealed as a human named Secre Swallowtail in Chapter 203. She turned into an anti-bird due to using too much forbidden magic.
2. Can Asta Get A Spirit?
Black Clover has established right from Chapter 1 that Asta has no magic of his own. Asta was born without a trace of mana since his mother absorbed all his mana when he was born.
Asta having no mana is the reason he can use anti-magic, but it also means no spirit will be drawn to him.
Spirits have their own powers and magic and tend to choose to bond with mages with similar magic. Even with the possible existence of a fifth spirit, none of the spirits would choose Asta since he has no regular magic.
Considering Asta’s anti-magic can kill spirits like he nearly did with Salamander, the spirits might not want anything to do with him.
3. Does He Need A Spirit?
Nacht mentioned in Chapter 271 that Asta is yet to harness Liebe’s full powers and that he was using just the leftovers or whatever was trickling out.
Asta finally debuted his true Devil Union Mode in Chapter 282 and easily overpowered the ancient demon of the Spade Kingdom.
Asta doesn’t need a spirit– his Devil Union Mode is already strong enough to rival any spirit. Both he and Liebe are yet to explore the limits of anti-magic since Liebe himself doesn’t remember much from being trapped in the grimoire for so long.
