The Mystery of Ezra’s Lightsaber: Why Sabine Has It and Why He Rejects It

In Ahsoka episode 7, Ezra Bridger refuses to use a lightsaber when he confronts a group of bandits, despite Sabine Wren urging him to arm himself.

This decision may reflect not only the influence of his Noti friends, who have a pacifist philosophy, but also a significant shift in his character. During his exile on Peridea, Ezra may have continued to oppose Thrawn by killing some of his Night Troopers. Therefore, he has acquired the skill of fighting without relying on a weapon.

Ezra demonstrates his ability to defend himself against Peridea bandits, Night Troopers, and even Shin Hati, without using his former lightsaber that Sabine offers him. He has developed a new style of combat that combines physical attacks with strategic Force pushes.

However, one can’t help but wonder why he refuses to take it. There may be several reasons for it.

Ezra did not use the lightsaber as he is out of practice after not using it for almost nine years. He also willingly gave the lightsaber to Sabine, so he believes it belongs to her now.

1. Ezra is Out of Practice After Not Using the Lightsaber for 9 Years

It may seem paradoxical, but in their current circumstances, Sabine has more expertise in using a lightsaber than Ezra, and he is aware of it. Ahsoka is set after the third season of The Mandalorian in the Star Wars chronology, as evidenced by Carson Teva’s reference to Moff Gideon’s uprising on Mandalore during Hera Syndulla’s trial.

This implies that Ezra has not used a lightsaber for at least nine years since the finale of the fourth season of Star Wars Rebels. He lacks practice, but he knows Sabine does not. He may also be trusting Ahsoka’s judgment in selecting Sabine as a Padawan, knowing that Sabine will succeed.

2. Ezra Believes the Lightsaber Now Belongs to Sabine

Ezra also rejects his lightsaber because he originally entrusted it to her. During the Battle of Lothal, Ezra left his lightsaber with Chopper to deliver to Sabine, as he went to face Thrawn alone.

In the subsequent years, Sabine has adapted the saber to fit her own style, and according to Huyang, it has become more hers than Ezra’s. She has also possessed it for much longer than he ever did, which is why Ezra considers it her weapon now.

There is still a possibility that Dave Filoni is preparing a dramatic moment for the viewers in Ahsoka’s finale, where Ezra has to use his lightsaber again, akin to when Captain America finally wields Mjölnir in Avengers: Endgame.

But until then, Ezra seems to manage fighting by improvising. He may have developed a strong faith in the Force during his exile, as he had no other means to oppose Thrawn. In any case, it remains uncertain whether Ezra will continue to avoid using a lightsaber in the Ahsoka finale or not.
