Does Bleach Anime Require a Remake?

The 2004 Bleach anime is definitely one of the most popular shounen anime that most anime fans grew up watching. However, despite all of its immense success, is it really good enough considering today’s day and age? With popular studios like MAPPA, MADHOUSE, and Ufotable out there making really visually appealing anime, it does seem like Bleach falls short in some aspects.

There are a ton of reasons why the Bleach anime’s abrupt ending in 2014 didn’t really do the series much justice. This article will go into the details of why the Bleach anime needs a remake, all in accordance with the standards that modern anime has set up.

What is Wrong With Bleach 2004?

Overwhelming Filler Episodes

There are a ton of minor issues that Bleach, as well as several other anime that aired in that timeline, have. Most anime like Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail, and the like that aired long ago all have a huge number of filler episodes.

Well, filler episodes were pretty much unavoidable at that point in time. That’s because, unlike now, back in the day, anime like Bleach wasn’t scheduled to run for just 12 or 24 episodes. Hence, it was only natural that the anime would catch up to the manga. This, however, doesn’t change the fact that the huge number of fillers in an anime makes it quite unappealing.

This problem is non-existent if an anime is to be remade, though. This is because, at this point, there’s a ton of source material to be animated, and fillers will not be spawned.

Poor Animation Quality

Not to put down any artist who had worked hard on the anime all those years ago, but compared to the anime that airs nowadays, it is quite obvious that Bleach 2004 (and other anime of that time) had lower-quality animation. The same goes for the art style of the 2004 anime.

There is no doubt that Bleach had pretty good animation for an anime that aired in the early 2000s. However, to modern anime fans, it is simply unappealing. Someone who has recently picked up anime is more likely to watch Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War than the first Bleach. This is definitely an issue.

Improvements

Most of the anime of that era could do with some improvements. A simple comparison of a fight in Bleach 2004 and in Bleach TYBW would make this apparent. The latest season of Bleach has shown greater attention to details and other nuances like soundtracks and art than Bleach 2004.

The Bleach manga has some really great art that has shown much attention to detail. The scenes of bloodshed and gore in it are breathtaking. A manga with such good art surely deserves an adaptation that doesn’t reflect poorly in such a way.

Why Should Bleach Get A Remake Now?

An ideal time for Bleach to get its remake is after the Bleach TYBW series is over. This gives the series a perfect time to start over and it’ll definitely increase the fanbase as well. One good reason for the anime to get a remake now is that the manga wrapped up in 2016, completely eliminating the worry of the anime being out of source material.

The One Piece Remake

Besides this, there has been news that One Piece is now going to get a remake by WIT Studio. This is exactly what the series needs as it’ll better cater to the needs of the new generation audience. There are rumors going around that Naruto, too, will get a remake (this hasn’t been confirmed yet). Since One Piece is getting a remake, why not Bleach as well?

About Bleach

Bleach is a Japanese anime television series based on Tite Kubo’s manga of the same name. The anime series adapts Kubo’s manga but also introduces some new, original, self-contained story arcs.

It is based in Karakura Town on a 15-year-old high school student Ichigo Kurosaki who becomes a substitute Soul Reaper when Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper, puts Soul Reaper powers in Ichigo. They barely manage to kill the hollow.

Although initially reluctant to accept the heavy responsibility, he begins eliminating some more hollows and also discovers that several of his friends and classmates are spiritually aware and have powers of their own.
