Who is Tanjiro’s Father in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba?

Demon Slayer is mysterious when it comes to family relationships. In season one, we saw Tanjiro’s family—his mother and five siblings, including Nezuko. Unfortunately, Muzan killed them, leaving Nezuko behind as a demon.

However, questions arise– Where is his father? Is he dead? What happened to him? Fellow readers, worry not; we have all the answers. So, let us dive in.

Who is Tanjiro’s Father?

Tanjuro Kamado was the father of Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer, who passed away before the story’s main events. Although the exact duration of his passing is not specified, glimpses of their interactions in various flashbacks suggest that he has been absent for a considerable period.

Tanjuro’s life was marked by the burden of an unnamed illness, which rendered his body emaciated and fragile, with pale skin. It might be typhoid or tuberculosis since these diseases didn’t have any cure back then.

In his final years, Tanjuro was confined to his bed, yet whenever he had the strength to move, he taught Tanjiro everything, just like a caring father.

Tanjuro Kamado’s exceptional potential and skills were evident, even though he was not officially a demon slayer. In the manga, he easily defeated a giant bear, which was impressive.

However, what sets him apart is his mastery of the Transparent World skill, which is a rare ability that only a few with the Demon Slayer Mark possess. This skill is directly linked to the Mark itself, which he had on his forehead, similar to Yoriichi’s. Tanjuro explained that he was born with the mark, and it’s possible that he activated it during his formative years.

Now, that’s not it. There is a rule that governs the laws of Marks– One who activates the Mark will possess immense strength, agility, and endurance, but they cannot live longer than 25 years. But Yoriichi is an exception.

The legendary swordsman lived up to 80 years and died due to aging. Given that Tanjuro was slightly older than 25 and was a Sun Breathing user with the Mark. This makes it another possible cause for his death.

Tanjuro’s Relationship with Yoriichi

Tanjuro Kamado was never a decendent of Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Yoriichi was the closest friend of Sumiyoshi, the Kamado family’s ancestor.

Yoriichi and Sumiyoshi became close friends after Yoriichi saved him, presumably from a demon. His frequent visits to the Kamado (Sumiyoshi’s) family earned them admiration.

One day, Sumiyoshi and his wife asked Yoriichi to demonstrate the Sun Breathing Techniques, which he gladly obliged. Sumiyoshi keenly observed Yoriichi’s performance, memorizing all the forms. Yoriichi confided in this compassionate family, sharing his troubles. Before parting, he entrusted his Hanafuda Earrings to Sumiyoshi, leaving a lasting legacy.

The Hinokami Kagura and the Hanafuda earrings were passed down through the generations until Tanjiro inherited them. As a kid, he saw his father perform Hinokami Kagura nonstop from sunset to sunrise, never flinching in his fragile state. The image of his father’s dance burned deep within him, helping him to use it against Muzan.

In addition to mastering the Hinokami Kagura, Tanjiro learned two other techniques from his father: the Transparent World and the Selfless State. Transparent World allows users to foresee attacks by perceiving the world around them. In contrast, the Selfless State conceals the user’s intentions. When combined, it can easily eradicate any demon.

Kamado Family’s Relationship with the Demon Slayers

It’s interesting to note that the Kamado family had no previous connection to the Demon Slayer Corps. Tanjiro was the first Kamado to become a demon slayer. He did so to turn his sister Nezuko back into a human.

Tanjiro’s resemblance to Yoriichi, a legendary demon slayer, has been a great asset to the demon slayers. This could be the reason why Muzan eliminated Tanjiro’s family. Even the Demon King fears him greatly and assigns Upper Moons to eliminate him.

In season 3, Nezuko becomes immune to the sun, which means Muzan will soon appear to abduct her. The heroes will need to prepare and strategize beforehand. I won’t reveal any spoilers, but it’s worth noting that the current generation of the Kamado family is crucial to the success of the Demon Slayer Corps.
