Asta’s long-drawn process of fulfilling his dream of becoming the next Wizard King is finally materializing and pushing the story forward.
The story started with Asta’s disadvantageous position as a non-magic user in a world that considered magic a norm.
His alterity was a fine contrast to his frenemy Yuno – an adept user of magic. Their rivalry is no suspense to the readers, with each one trying to be on step ahead of the other. This raises the question — Who is stronger? Asta or Yuno?
1. Quick Answer
As of chapter 243, in the Spade Kingdom arc, Asta stands stronger than Yuno. The Black-Asta form that links Asta to the devil has established him as a formidable and unique opponent. Yuno follows close behind but falls short due to Asta’s Anti-Magic.
2. Asta and Yuno’s Growth
Asta has come a long way from his excessive optimism of overcoming his inability to use mana/magic.
Debating ‘Is Asta stronger than Yuno?’ might have seemed pointless in the early days as Yuno had the advantage of using mana. Not to mention, his skills in using mana were far from ordinary and signified the potential of a prodigy.
But the story and character developments have had an interesting way to make questions re-surface.
In the current arc — the Spade Kingdom arc — Asta has managed to create a buzz amongst fans. Asta has shown the capability of defeating a fortress full of enemies and its powerful commander who displayed devil-like powers at Candero.
In the recent chapters, Yuno was easily defeated by one of the Dark Triad’s Zenon and was almost on the verge of death. Whereas, we see Asta going head to head with one of the Dark Triad’s Dante.
This, in itself, shows that Asta has grown stronger than Yuno in the course of their cordial rivalry.
3. What are Yuno’s strengths?
Yuno is a powerful mage with a four-leaf clover grimoire, vast mana reserves, adept magic skills, intelligence, and magic control.
He uses Wind Magic commands the wind spirit — Sylph. The myriad of Yuno’s magic techniques and skills form a solid ground for long-range attacks.
Therefore, Yuno is an average close-range fighter but an excellent mid to long-range fighter. Yuno never needed to improve his physical prowess, especially stamina and strength, due to his mana abilities.
4. What are Asta’s strengths?
Asta, in contrast to Yuno, would train daily to increase his physical capacity due to his inability to use mana.
This forms the foundation of Asta’s close-range fighting. Asta possesses the five-leaf clover grimoire that links him to a devil that grants him Anti-Magic energy.
Asta is a skilled swordsman and wields three swords – Demon-Slayer, Demon-Dweller, and Demon-Destroyer. Asta also possesses the sense of Ki that he learned from Yami Sukehiro.
The sense of Ki, unlike mana, helps him sense attacks and approaching projectiles. Mana only helps others sense mana or mana-based attacks.
Most importantly, Asta gains ground over Yuno through his Anti-Magic abilities. This allows him to nullify magic to an extent. With Yuno’s dependence on mana/magic – this creates a disadvantageous situation for him.
In his Black Asta form, Asta is usually drawn towards strong magic. This creates a pull towards Yuno and is a drawback for Asta. But it is seen that Asta has gained control over it to an extent.
Asta is an outstanding close-range fighter but an average long-range fighter.
5. Conclusion: Asta vs. Yuno
Asta and Yuno’s different abilities balance out like Yin and Yang. Still, due to Asta’s circumstances – he has a slight edge over Yuno.
Yuno’s ability to fight long range will be advantageous. Still, it’s highly probable for Asta to break through that and close in on Yuno. This is possible through the Demon Slayer, Demon Destroyer, and Demon Dweller swords.
If Asta manages to get close to Yuno in a fight, we believe it would result in Yuno’s defeat as Yuno does not possess any specific, close-range techniques that could help him win.
