What Is Kurogiri’s Hidden Secret? Truth Identity of Shirakumo Oboro

My Hero Academia season 5 has just got a whole lot interesting last week! The quirky family drama in episode 18 was immediately followed by a very intriguing preview of the next episode. By the looks of it, a plot twist is brewing– and a tragic one at that.

I am gonna tell you all about it, but brace yourself for some heavy spoilers.

Following the events of the Shie Hassaikai arc, Kurogiri was apprehended by Gran Torino in the mountains in Chapter 163 and imprisoned at Tartarus. The heroes hoped to capture the rest of the League of Villains by getting Kurogiri out of the picture, cutting off the League’s escape route.

The mysterious villain would also provide the opportunity to glean information about Shigaraki and the Nomu, who were still largely a mystery.

After being contacted by Tsukauchi, Aizawa, and Present Mic headed to Tartarus in Chapter 253, where they also met up with Gran Torino. Tsukauchi then divulged that, unfortunately, Kurogiri hadn’t provided any helpful information, but through him, they’d come to a revelation about the Nomu.

Kurogiri’s hidden secret is his identity. He is Shirakumo Oboro, an old classmate and friend of Aizawa and Present Mic who was believed to have passed away during his UA years. Now, he is a Nomu created by All For One and Dr. Garaki by combining multiple factors to create create a single new quirk using Shirakumo’s corpse as the base.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from My Hero Academia.

Who was Shirakumo Oboro?

Shirakumo Oboro, also known as Loud Cloud, was a former Class 2-A student at U.A. with Present Mic and Aizawa who passed away abruptly during an internship. While fighting a villain, he sacrificed himself to save a group of children and was crushed under the weight of a collapsing building.

He possessed the quirk called Cloud, which allowed him to generate dense clouds. These clouds were capable of withstanding relatively large amounts of weight, storing objects, or carrying and moving himself around.

Do you see the connection now? Kurogiri too is always surrounded by strange clouds.

Aizawa, Shirakumo, and Present Mic stuck together through thick and thin, dreamed of becoming heroes together, and starting an agency together. The trio were all incredibly close and even gained the nickname ‘The Three Stooges of Class A.’

Aizawa was deeply attached to Shirakumo and admired him greatly. He even still wears the goggles Shirakumo gave him. Yes, those goggles that now define Aizawa have a heartfelt backstory too but more on that later.

How did Shirakumo turn into Kurogiri?

Gran Torino theorized that Shirakumo’s body was likely swapped out before the cremation process. As Tsukauchi explained, All For One combined multiple quirk factors with Cloud to create a new singular quirk, Warp Gate.

Dr. Garaki and All For One may have also experimented on Shirakumo or erased his memories since Kurogiri didn’t recognize Aizawa during the USJ incident or hesitate to attack him. Shirakumo may have also been hardwired to follow orders like the other Nomu, which would explain his inability to divulge information about the League.

The heroes believed the Nomu were just mindless puppets. But, after monitoring Kurogiri and looking through the history of another Nomu they’d identified, they concluded that Nomu could retain parts of their personality.

The heroes hoped Aizawa, and Present Mic could bring Kurogiri to his senses using their personal connection and glean some information about the League’s whereabouts and plans.

Following the conversation with Aizawa, Shirakumo momentarily gained enough control to mutter Aizawa’s name and hint at Dr. Garaki and Shigaraki’s location.

Without revealing too much about the conversation between Aizawa, Mic and Kurogiri, let me just give you a little advice. You don’t wanna watch My Hero Academia’s next episode without tissues. That’s it. No more spoilers.
