Whatever happened to Towa & Setsuna’s beloved mom? And why has she been sleeping inside the Tree of Ages since Season 1 of Yashahime?
If you’re not up to date with Yashahime, well today’s the day! Allow me to open your minds to the events that enraptured Lord Sesshōmaru to her lover — Rin!
Yes, Rin! That lovely little 9-to-10-year-old girl we saw traveling with Lord Sesshōmaru, Jaken, and Kohaku in the main series (“InuYasha”)!
It might come as a shock to you that Lord Sesshōmaru and Rin are a couple in Yashahime. But not to worry! Rin came of age a long time ago in “InuYasha: The Final Act”! So, she has every right to be with her beloved despite the age difference, longevity, and mortality!
Rin has been stuck in the Tree of Ages since Season 1 of Yashahime because a demonic silver-scaled curse is eating and rotting her body!
To stop the spread of the curse, the Spirit of the Tree of Ages (in Lady Kikyō’s form) suggested to Jaken to seal Rin inside the Tree of Ages until one of her daughters (Setsuna) save her!
Could you believe that it has come to this point? Just to save Rin, her body must be preserved in a “cryonically frozen” state during the Sengoku Jidai (the “Warring Era of Japan”)!
It’s unbelievable to some degree because this is only a story showcasing a good narrative in an entertaining format (TV anime). But at the same time, it’s creepy and spooky even though Yashahime is a Shōnen series.
Rin is literally in a “sleeping beauty death” state. And if you think true love’s kiss from Sesshōmaru will break the curse, well sorry to burst your bubble cause Setsuna’s the one to bring Rin back!
Who Gave Rin the Silver-Scaled Curse?
The silver-scaled curse is courtesy by none other than the beautiful and powerful demon: Lady Zero — elder sister of Lord Kirinmaru (nemesis of Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha)!
Lady Zero is envious of women who are beautiful AND loved!
Take note that she’s not just jealous of beautiful and powerful demons like Sesshōmaru’s mom! Rather, Zero is infuriated with humans like Izayoi (InuYasha’s mom) and Rin because they’re mortal humans yet they are loved by full-fledged immortal demons!
But why does she hate women like Izayoi and Rin? Well, Zero had a failed love life. She failed to enamor Tōga — the Great Dog Demon who is father to both InuYasha and Sesshōmaru!
By making the Great Dog Demon fall in love with a full-fledged demon like her, it would make her more prideful!
Yet the fact that Tōga chose Sesshōmaru’s mom and Izayoi, well…it only goes to show that Zero is not even worth the Great Dog Demon’s time! She’s just lice to a powerful dog demon like him!
“What do female humans have that I don’t have? Why are they loved by powerful demons like Tōga — the Great Dog Demon — when there are influential, gorgeous, and youthful demons like me who are immortal?”
If the above quote is the mindset of Zero, then it’s no wonder she’d hostage Rin!
It’ll be killings two birds in one stone because when she kills Rin, she gets rid of Towa and Setsuna — the half-demon twins she deems will threaten full-fledged demon’s existence (like Lord Kirinmaru’s and Lord Sesshōmaru’s).
Also, take note that Zero already died and her body is only existing because of a manufactured puppet using her magic! This was revealed in episode 7 of Yashahime. It was also revealed in this episode that this is one way for her to defy age!
Rather than traveling to Kagome’s present era to steal make-up, moisturizer, or age-defying creams, Zero chose to stop her time by manufacturing a magical puppet body that will not age!
She may have some screws loose when it comes to beautification and love because she chose to die to defy old age. But Zero’s hatred for people like Rin and her half-demon twins are the primary reasons why she went out of her way to go to such extreme measures!
Will Setsuna be Able to Break Rin’s Curse?
Setsuna is finding a way to break Rin’s curse and she’s working towards that goal! The only way to do this is to sever the red thread of fate that binds Rin’s curse to Lady Zero!
But Setsuna must use a special sword called the “Yukari no Tachikiri” to do this. And we’ve seen Tōtōsai at the beginning of Yashahime’s 2nd Season forge this magnificent blade!
Briefly explaining, the “Yukari no Tachikiri” is an exalted form of Setsuna’s naginata (or “sword”)! Since obtaining this larger and sharper blade from Tōtōsai, Setsuna can emit an enhanced attack of her “Scourge of Swallows”! Pretty epic, isn’t it?
But why can’t Setsuna cut the demonic Dream Butterfly possessing herself and her mom? Why must it be Sesshōmaru who needs to act as a hero of the day to finally severe the Dream Butterfly between Setsuna and Rin?
Well, the quickest answer to that is because Sesshōmaru’s a century-old and all-powerful Great Dog Demon like his honorable and enigmatic father! He’s an experienced swordsman despite losing an arm in the main series!
Despite Setsuna’s harsh training with the “Yukari no Tachikiri”, she is still shuddering; hence, why she is still unable to wield her naginata properly to cut spiritual demons like the Dream Butterfly!
Regardless of the dire circumstances surrounding the main cast, I hope that fans get to witness Setsuna severing the red thread of fate tying Lady Zero to Rin soon. Henceforth, Rin can awaken to the beloved arms of her family after her 14 or 15 years of slumber!
