A Whisker Away also known as Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu (Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat) in Japanese was released on 18th June 2020 as a Netflix exclusive.
The anime streaming on Netflix was also mentioned in a tweet by ANN.
[SPOILER] As we already know, the protagonist of the anime, a girl called Miyo tries to get close to her crush, Kento by turning into a cat. Kento showers the cat with affection as a deeper bond builds between them.
To Miyo, this world of being a cat is far more attractive than the real world. When she is a cat she doesn’t have to suffer through the trauma of her past.
Miyo, although a bubbly girl at school, never speaks of her family. Behind her upbeat personality, she hides the sorrow of a dysfunctional family. Becoming a cat is a way of escapism for her.
Little does Miyo know that her repeated transformation into a cat is slowly stripping away her humanity. But she does not mind losing her human self because she is far too absorbed to live her life as a cat.
She learns of the cost when she realizes, that the cat which offered her the mask (the key to the transformation) is a gatherer of souls of humans and cats alike.
The bright art style keeps the audience from guessing the sadness hidden in the story. As Miyo enters the cat island to retrieve her human self, the audience is treated to a rich view of a different world. The anime is aesthetically pleasing as well as emotionally touching.
The combined efforts of Studio Colorido, Twin Engine, and Toho Animation have shone through. Written by Mari Okada (Black Butler, Anohana), the film has raised expectations of the viewers.
