Thorfinn realizes this in episode 4 of Vinland Saga season 2, “Awakening.”

When faced with an attack that would kill him, similar to Askeladd’s, Thorfinn’s body moved on its own and chose to live instead. Snake realizes his potential and keeps him alive since that’s what he wants.

Einar faces his past trauma yet again; invaders killed his entire family, and sitting beside him is someone who has invaded villages in the past. He gets angry and projects his frustrations on Thorfinn, but he will not fight back.

Episode 5 Speculation

We will get the introduction of a new character next episode, and from their looks, they may be a member of the England army or at least connected to it. Somehow or the other, they may trace to Prince Canute and bring back Thorfinn’s trauma.

Thorfinn has realized that he wants to live, but he still doesn’t know what to do with his life. He must continue working and think about it, somehow finding a life of peace despite all this war.

Recap of Episode 4

As Thorfinn lies bloody and slashed as Fox slices him through and through, Snake finally intervenes, punches his lights out, and gets an explanation from the rest of the mercenaries. He introduces himself to Thorfinn and goes to attack.

Thorfinn quickly dodges the attack and counters with a kick which is immediately blocked; he is reminded of Askeladd. Snake threatens all the mercenaries that if they make any more trouble, he will severely injure them all.

Einar gets angry about the ordeal and shouts his frustrations, but Pater and Thorfinn calm him down. He gives him maximum hospitality, puts medicine on all his wounds, and even gives him his old shirt.

He immediately returns to the woods to start working; Einar realizes Thorfinn is no ordinary man and probably has plenty of battle experience. He talks a bit about his childhood, a life of war and murder.

During the night, Einar thinks back to the invasion of his farm and the destruction he had to face. Thorfinn’s answer to his question enraged him, and he choked him in his sleep out of rage.

Thorfinn also dreams back to his childhood, where he was forced to kill multiple people for the sake of living. Einar eventually eases his grip and cant bring himself to do it. Thorfinn wakes up screaming and struggling yet again from his nightmares.

Einar sits frustrated after he wakes up, and Thorfinn continues thinking about his past. Thorfinn feels that nothing has happened in his life, and Einar asks him if he wants to die.

But Einar gets frustrated at his answer and wants him to be grateful that he is even alive right now. Getting food, sleep, and even being able to chit-chat when he is enslaved is a miracle of his own.

As the episode closes, we see a mysterious new character walk amidst the darkness.
