In Chapter 185, Thorfinn extends a friendship proposal towards the native Indigenous tribe, Lnu. Although the conversation between them was mostly indecipherable, it is pretty much clear that both parties have accepted a peace treaty.

5. Recap of 184

In Chapter 184, a band of Indigenous people heads towards Thorfinn with spears and knives. His crew notices this from far away and warns everyone that a war is about to break out.

Things get so serious that most of them were about to draw out swords. Eyvar gets ready to start slaying them before the natives can make their first move. It seems that the Norse blood in them has been awakened.

Meanwhile, Thornfinn stays calm and continues to converse with them. Although he hardly understands the native language, he realizes that they haven’t come here to fight.

He feels that the language barrier shouldn’t come in their way of friendship, so he extends his hands for a handshake. With that, the island dwellers recognize Thorfinn as their friend.

Later, they reveal that they have come here with gifts in return for what Thorfinn has sent them. This act of generosity confirms mutual respect between the two parties.

But how long will this uneasy peace exist? Can all these tribesmen fully trust the white-skinned Europeans? We will find that out in the upcoming chapters.
