5. Recap of Chapter 176

Thorfinn lands on Leif’s Farm and greets his grandfather. He informs that he is only here for 2-3 days to pick up some pioneers for his journey.

He wants to drop some supplies off and pick them up with the second batch of pioneers next time.

His grandfather Leif listens to his words but does not understand, making Thorfinn question his behavior.

He is informed that Leif has become old and senile and is sometimes short of hearing. Listening to this, Thorfinn becomes sad as he cherishes his dear grandfather.

Thorfinn inquires about Bug-Eyes, to which Mols informs that Bug-Eyes has left for Norway after stealing some money and having an argument.

The scene shifts to a time skip where six months ago, we see Bug-Eyes in Norway with a girl around his arm. He seems to be having fun gambling away all his money.

Later, Thorfinn assures Leif that he won’t leave his side as he is his tutor in life. Leif shows the old smoke-pipe he got from the Indians in Vinland.

He gives Thorfinn the item and advises him to offer the smoke to any “Mi’kmaq,” meaning “friends.”

Leif remembers the feathered ornament gifted to him 20 years ago.  Thorfinn remembers everything that happened 20 years ago and how everything has changed him as a person.

Leif advises Thorfinn to follow his heart; Thorfinn sees the spirits of Thors and Askeladd smiling at him by Leif’s side, and he replies, “I will, Father,” as if to thank Leif for being the father figure he needed in his life and also to thank Thors and Askeladd for watching him from above.
