Vinland Saga Chapter 171 – Release Date, Where To Read & Story Updates

It’s been a day since chapter 170 of Vinland Saga – Sailing West Part 4 – adorned the pages of the Monthly Afternoon.

Thorfinn seems to be settling into his role as a merchant traveler as he moves further away from his violent warrior past.

The chapter says goodbye to the delightful and kind Cordelia – a slave of Halfdan – that Thorfinn and his friends encounter. But it does not move the narrative away from the grand dream of seeking ‘Vinland.’

Chapter 171 Release Date & Speculation

We’re in a consensus of the fact that Chapter 171 will be releasing on April 25, 2020, if Makoto Yukimura’s schedule is intact. The next chapter will likely start anew under the narrative of Thorfinn’s pursuit of Vinland.

Thorfinn seeks to find like-minded people who wish for peace and to create farmlands in his utopia. Thorfinn will continue to prepare to sail West. But this will involve tackling the challenges that arise in his journey.

Theories

Since Vinland Saga is based on the expedition of Thorfinn Karlsefni – it may exercise freedom in the narrative but not the climax.

Thorfinn Karlsefni does find his Vinland and build an unknown colony in what’s believed to today’s Newfoundland.

Although we believe that this will not prove to be easy, Thorfinn from the manga will likely have to enter negotiations with the natives inhabiting Vinland.

But this will serve the purpose of character development by establishing him as a fully-fledged expeditioner.

Chapter 170 Plot

Chapter 170 continues from exactly where 169 ended – which is Halfdan’s entrance and discovery of Cordelia. Halfdan notices the mirroring personalities of Thorfinn and his father Thors – who was known to help the underprivileged or injured.

Thorfinn greets him amicably, but Halfdan clearly states that this talk won’t affect their arrangement. Thorfinn informs him that their preparations for Vinland require not only materials but also people – referring to Cordelia’s desire to go to Vinland. But Cordelia gives in and decides to leave with Halfdan.

Einar attempts to negotiate a price to release Cordelia from Halfdan, who demands an unattainable price. Halfdan elaborates that Halvar (as he calls Cordelia) works equivalent to that of ten men.

Thorfinn then goes on to narrate his slavery days and claims that the “owner determines the motivation of slaves” by offering freedom in turn for a job.

As Cordelia leaves with Halfdan, Thorfinn reassures them that they’ll go to Vinland together – even offering Halfdan to build farmlands there.

The chapter ends with Thorfinn saying that “the first means to everything is to speak and understand each other” – establishing his maturity.
