Ost Hourai had some character development in this episode. Her clashing emotions and depth were what led the episode. At the end of the episode, a shocking revelation has again turned things upside down for our protagonists.
A new character shows up in this episode, and his name is Kyo Ethnina. He is the wielder of the book vassal weapon. All of the shield hero’s plans are going off the road, and the Spirit Tortoise seems unbeatable, but things have taken a new turn altogether.

Ost Hourai’s revelation is as shocking as it can be, all this time, the anime was building toward this twist, and now that the secret is revealed, we have to see what the next step is going to be.
Ost Hourai has been an interesting character, and now that the real truth is in front of us, I just don’t know what to expect next. The anime has been slapping us with plot twists and reveals every episode, and I have a strong feeling that there is still much more to come our way.

Episode 5 Recap
Ost Hourai has been in dismay about what she is doing. She is a familiar who is assigned to take souls, and there she is, feeling sad about human lives. She was hallucinating and saw a dark figure in that hallucination. When she wakes up, she sees L’Arc standing in front of them.
Naofumi tells her who L’Arc is. Therese and Glass accompany him. He tells Naofumi that he has come back to kill the guy who opened the Spirit Tortoise’s shield. He is a threat who is doing all this for selfish pleasure.
L’Arc offers to team up with shield hero, but Naofumi refuses as he doesn’t want to team up with someone he has to kill ultimately. They go their separate ways. Naofumi moves ahead and reaches a dragon hourglass.
It shows the number of souls taken by the Spirit Tortoise. When it is full, it forms a barrier to protect the world from waves.
L’Arc reaches the heart of the Spirit Tortoise and begins destroying it. Naofumi finds the exit, probably the mouth of Spirit Tortoise, Ost shows them the path to the heart just beside the opening, and they finally reach the heart.
There they find a guy who goes by the name of Kyo Ethnina, wielder of the Book vassal weapon.
He is the one who opened the seal of the Spirit Tortoise. He tells them what L’Arc is fighting is just fake hearts, and it’s all a trap. Naofumi demands that Kyo release the Spirit Tortoise’s control and return the souls he has taken, but he refuses to do so. He disappears but not before activating the self-defense system of the Tortoise’s heart.
They start attacking the heart, and Ost starts getting hurt. She faints and reaches an unknown place, and a tattoo on her chest activates, it looks like it is over for her, but she wakes up again. She tells them that cutting the Tortoise’s head or heart will not kill it, and she now remembers everything.
Ost casts a spell that opens the gate to the deepest depths of Spirit Tortoise. The Spirit Tortoise begins regenerating its heart and wakes up.
They find Kyo in there, and it is revealed that all this wouldn’t have happened if they had just killed Ost as she is directly related to the Spirit Tortoise’s core, and one could say that she is the Spirit Tortoise herself.
The tattoo on her chest starts radiating and connecting to the same design drawn on the stone in the deepest depth.

Tate no Yusha no Nariagari or The Rising of the Shield Hero is an isekai light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi. It was initially published as a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website from 2012 to 2015.
