The Office Throws The Mandalorian Out of the Water

The Office became the talk of the town, ever since NBC announced the home transfer of the sitcom from Netflix to Peacock. Fans began streaming the show on Netflix before the transfer, hoping to watch it for one last time.

The workplace mockumentary, The Office, was streamed so much that it overtook Star Wars’ The Mandalorian for the number one spot in the Nielson Rankings by an impressive three-hundred-million minute number.

According to Variety magazine, the record mark was crossed in the week beginning December 7, 2020. The take over is shocking (in a good way), to say the least, given that it has been seven–almost eight years since The Office has ended.

That, and both the shows are opposites in more than one aspect. The Office (2005) is a long-running workplace sit-com that revolves around the daily lives of the office workers employed at a fictional paper company, Dunder Mifflin.

Whereas, The Mandalorian (2019) is the first sci-fi and fantasy series in the Star Wars franchise, which is set in a faraway galaxy. It follows Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter and a child that was in his protection. And, of course, there’s our favorite, baby Yoda, Grogu.

Variety Magazine has reported that The Office was streamed for 1.3 billion minutes that week, overtaking the respectable 1 billion mark of The Mandalorian.

The numbers may have been influenced by the episode number, too, given The Office stands proud at 192 episodes compared to sixteen episodes of The Mandalorian.

Of course, the fact that The Office was about to leave Netflix for Peacock must have been a factor to increase the streaming number too.

The Office Revival Could be Set During Original Show’s Timeline

While attaining the number 1 position is already impressive enough, The Office managed to get on that position seven times now, setting a new record.

The Office has been successful because of its meme-worthy lines and epic comedy scenes. Given how popular it is, it’s not much of a surprise that the series became number one, once again.
