3. Episode 4 Recap

I. Barbie’s Wrath

In Episode 4, Barbie calls all the dolls in the hall to discuss the phantom incident. She gets mad at everyone for not being able to deal with the situation properly. She targets Rosemary’s squad for letting the scorches slip into the room.

Mia tries to defend her team by saying that they were training Emilico and weren’t ready for such a disturbance. Such a brave move is undoubtedly appreciable, but she gets kicked by Barbie for talking back to her.

Barbie is a Star Bearer, who is superior to all other dolls on that floor. Moreover, Barbie’s Shadow master is a very important figure, so no one dares to argue with her.

Her wrath falls over two other new dolls, Shaun and Rum. She believes that Rum’s negligence in cleaning has resulted in the phantom invasion. Emilico stands for them and bluntly says that there must be some other explanation.

II. The Night Watchers

Barbie assigns the three of them for night duties to determine why the phantoms and prove that Rum isn’t responsible for it. Emilico merrily accepts this and starts investigating for soot leaks in the mansion.

Just like Emilico herself, Shaun and Rum are called ‘defective pieces.’ But sadly, they don’t possess Emilico’s optimistic attitude, so she befriends them and comforts them with her kind words.

After five days of hard work, they come across some living scorches and soot phantoms. On further exploration, they find out that soot is seeping through a broken hinge from the attic, and thus the phantom mystery has been solved.

Meanwhile, Kate is concerned about Emilico’s growing negligence towards her and the debut ceremony. They haven’t exchanged new information last few days, and this may affect their compatibility.

Shadows House is a slice of life supernatural manga by Soumatou. It was first released in Weekly Young Jump in September 2018.

The anime takes us to the mysterious, western-style mansion populated by a clan of “Shadows,” who imitate the trappings of human aristocracy. The Shadows have no faces and are attended by “Living dolls.”

The story follows Emiriko, a doll who serves Living Shadow Kate. Apart from being her maid, Emiriko is expected to become Kate’s “face” once her mistress is old enough to be introduced to the other mansion residents.
