Kenshin meets Aritomo Yamagata in episode 2 of Rurouni Kenshin 2023, titled “Tokyo Samurai Yahiko Myojin.”

We met some new characters in this episode. Kenshin and Kaoru got into trouble with an arrogant imperialist officer named Ujiki. He led a squad known as the sword-bearing squad and misused his power for his own satisfaction.

The main characters of the episode were Yahiko Myojin and Aritomo Yamagata. The former was a kid working for some yakuza who decided to leave his job of pickpocketing. While Yamagata went to Tokyo to recruit Kenshin into the imperial army.

Kenshin will save Myojin from the yakuza in episode 3 of Rurouni Kenshin 2023, titled “Kasshin-ryu-Reborn.”

Yahiko seems to be in grave danger. Going against the yakuza is very dangerous in itself. In the next episode, we will see what Yahiko’s boss will make him do in return for being disobedient.

Yahiko will join Kauro’s dojo and will train under Kaoru and Kenshin in the hope of becoming strong. We might also meet some new characters. Kaoru will try to deal with a bunch of drunkards who will be causing trouble to the townsfolk.

3. Episode 2 Recap

Kaoru gets frustrated that no one is coming to her dojo to practice. She decides to head out to practice at the place of an acquaintance. While heading out, they bump into a kid who pickpockets Kenshin.

Kenshin doesn’t get angry at him. Getting annoyed, the boy throws Kenshin’s purse at him and tells him not to call him a kid. He introduces himself as Yahiko Myojin, a Tokyo samurai.

The kid leaves, and they reach Tokyo. Kenshin is amazed by the town. A strange man asks Kaoru for directions to the police station. It seems like he is there in search of Himura Battosai.

Kenshin gets caught again for violation of the Sword Abolishment Act. Lieutenant Ujiki, a policeman who leads a group of sword-carrying police squad, shows up.

Ujiki tells Kenshin to take out his sword. He misuses his power and tells the other police officers to leave the matter to him despite them telling him that Kenshin is harmless.

The townsfolk also don’t like his egoist attitude and try to oppose him, but he orders his men to arrest everyone and slay the ones who oppose him. Seeing all this, Kenshin takes out his sword and gets ready to fight Ujiki.

The new police officer who came to town had a conversation with the town police chief. They talk about Battosai and how they think the real deal has appeared in the town because of the recent arrests of the tricksters we met in the first episode.

A policeman barges in, telling him about the trouble caused by Ujiki. The chief tells the new officer that Ujiki is an imperialist. Kenshin defeats all the officers and Ujiki with just one hit for each.

The townsfolk praise him for his bravery and gather around him. Kenshin meets the new officer and calls him Yamagata. We learn that Yamagata was the general of the Kiheitai and the current army general of the Meji government.

Yamagata offers Kenshin to join the army as an official, but seeing the misuse of power, Kenshin refuses and tells him that he is happy being a Rurouni. He is happy that he can still protect people even if he has just one sword.

Yahiko decides to leave pickpocketing. When his boss comes to get payment from him, he tells him that he doesn’t have any. His boss beats him up and prepares to show him who is the master.

Rurouni Kenshin is a manga series written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1994 to 1999. The 2023 series will be a reboot of the 1996 series, re-adapting the original manga.

In the Meiji era, 11th year, Kenshin Himura is a wandering samurai who was once feared as an assassin. However, he has taken a vow to never kill people and atone for his crimes.

He comes across Kaoru Kamiya, the head of a small dojo that is on the verge of shutting down, because of a man who is killing in the name of her dojo.
