SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from One Piece.

One Piece Chapter 1050 is out, and it has sparked some major confusion among fans. While most people are taking Kaido’s end at face value, some are wondering whether he might get back up.

In the latest chapter, the narrator announces that the victor of the battle in the skies of Wano is Straw Hat Luffy, but the panels hint to something else brewing under the surface – literally!

The entire Wano Country arc has been about freeing the subjugated nation from the clutches of Kaido and Orochi, gaining vengeance for the original shogun, Kozuki Oden.

Oden’s 9 Red Scabbards had told Luffy in Zou that their primary goal was to open the borders of Wano Country and lift it from its isolationism.

According to Oden’s prophesy, Wano would reopen its borders with the return of Joy Boy.

In the last few chapters, Luffy was revealed to be Joy Boy, the usurper and fake shogun Orochi was beheaded by Denjiro, and Emperor Kaido was defeated by Luffy with the help of his Gear 5: Nika.

Momonosuke manages to step up his game, create new flame clouds, and land Onigashima safely near the Flower Capital.

This seems like the most opportune moment for Wano to open its borders to the outside world. However, Oda seems to have different plans.

According to chapter 1050, Momo tells Zunesha that after a lot of thought, he has decided not to open Wano’s borders just yet. But the borders and mountains themselves might begin to break due to the underwater volcanic eruption.

What causes the Submarine Volcanic Eruption in Wano?

Luffy, Kid, and Law’s attacks sent the 2 Yonkos sinking into the underground magma pool. With the explosives around Onigashima going off, the impact of the landing island, and the powerful Emperors falling, the underwater volcano is set off.

Luffy’s Haki-infused gigantic punch from chapter 1049 drives Kaido deep into the ground. In chapter 1050, we see Big Mom and Kaido in 2 holes side by side, under Mt. Fuji.

In the Udon Prisoner Mine, Babanuki sees unusual activity on the surface of the sea, after which there is a huge explosion.

It is so big that it can be seen by the people in the capital.

Momonosuke appears in his dragon form and tells the citizens that there is no reason to be alarmed, since the eruption is just in fact the final send-off for the supreme commander of the Beasts Pirates.

Will Mt. Fuji Erupt?

There is no indication that Mt. Fuji will erupt, but the fact that we see Kaido and Big Mom right below the active volcano might suggest the Mt. Fuji will erupt for the Wano climax.

The tremors caused by the underwater volcano explosion, might also catalyze the awakening of Mt. Fuji. In that eruption, Kaido and Big Mom will spew up along with the lava.

It is as if Oda has been setting the stage for it. Why else would he have mentioned Fujiyama in the first place?

According to the Chekhov’s Gun principle, having such an important detail and not having it contribute to the narrative, would be a false promise on Oda’s part.

The Fire Festival in the capital is coming to an end, and through the smoke of the explosion, we see the silhouettes of human-Momo, Hiyori, and the Scabbards.

Denjiro says that he wants to present the new shogun of Wano, which could either by Momo or Hiyori.

But before he does, Mt. Fuji has to erupt. Kaido (and Big Mom) might return for one last battle. The ending of the Wano arc had better be explosive.

Why does Momo keep Wano shut?

Currently, it’s not clear why Momo is refusing to open Wano’s borders. But we have to remember that the Marines have their ships positioned right outside the borders. This might be why Momo is choosing to postpone the much-awaited historic moment.

Additionally, with all the talk and show about magma, I can’t help but think of Akainu, who possesses the Magma-Magma Devil Fruit.

In a way, perhaps it’s a good thing that Momo is keeping Wano sealed – one catastrophe at a time. Imagine having to fight the Marines, along with 2 Yonkos and an erupting volcano.

In the next few chapters, maybe through the eruption of Mt. Fuji and the manipulation of magma, Akainu can break through the borders even though they are shut.

At this exact moment, Kaido and Big Mom might emerge and come to a temporary partnership with the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance to fend of the World Government’s ships.

Or, alternatively, while the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance is fighting the Government, Kaido and Big Mom can make their escape.

Luffy is out of commission right now, and I don’t see him fighting for at least a while. Same with the rest of the big players.

Whatever happens next, has to involve the remaining members of the Kozuki clan, the retainers, the Alliance, and the country itself, since it is the last leg of Wano.

Whether or not the 2 Yonnko make a comeback, something is going to happen that will force the borders of Wano open – fulfilling Oden’s prophesy.

This could be positive or negative, as per the intensity of the explosion and eruption, the invasion of the Marines, and the recovery of the Straw Hats.

With Joy Boy and Momo’s help, Zunesha might also come into the picture to save Wano one last time. And this will be when Wano opens its borders, without the threat of the government trying to assimilate it.
