Never Have I Ever…Wanted Another Season So Bad, Season 2 Updates

Mindy Kaling’s latest brainchild Never Have I Ever has inherited every good thing its mother is best known for. It is funny, surprising, quirkily sexy, and a stereotype-slayer through and through.

Even as Netflix is yet to make any official hear ho, fans are sure of the young Mindy and show’s lead Devi making a comeback in a sequel season.

The Netflix original follows a Canadian-Tamil teen Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi, an Indian-American teenager, in the months after her dad passes away due to a sudden heart attack.

As Devi sails the problematic sea of grief, her teenage hormones threaten to drown her instead. However, her friends and family, and even her arch-nemesis come to her rescue time and again, giving us one of the most refreshing comings of age stories of our times.

Never Have I Ever is currently trending the Top 3 on Netflix, according to the streamer’s Top 10 feature. And, although the Season 1 finale was immensely satisfying and included a special cameo by narrator and tennis legend John McEnroe, there are quite a few incomplete storylines that have left us wanting more.

When is the next season out?

The Netflix series was co-created by The Office and The Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Lang Fisher.

The filming for the current season began in September 2018. So if we are expecting another season, it should be around May 2021.

However, this estimate is notwithstanding the worldwide production hiatus caused by Coronavirus. Keeping our fingers crossed for another round of Devi’s wonderful life.

Hunk Paxton or geeky Ben

Since the season’s start, Devi’s intentions for the football team’s sweetheart Paxton (Darren Barnet) are quite clear. In fact, in what may seem like a dream sequence, Devi even asks him for a one night stand, to which he nonchalantly agrees!

While the plan does not go through, the duo hit it off and even kiss in later episodes.

On the other hand, Devi’s childhood nemesis Ben Gross, who has a whole episode for himself and his lonely teenage, makes a surprise move at her on his birthday.

By season end, it is Ben who ensures that Devi makes it to an important ceremony for her dad, after her fallout with Nalini.

The series ends with Devi and Ben’s kiss even as Paxton realizes his love for Devi, thanks to his sister. It is a complicated yet entirely innocent love triangle, making it quite relatable to many young teens starting out in the complex world of love and relationships.

We are so excited to see Mindy’s take on it all! However, for Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, it is Team Devi all the way.

When asked whom she would prefer personally, Maitreyi told TV Guide that she would want for Devi to love herself first.

Will Devi and Nalini move to India?

The fallout between Devi and her mom Nalini was triggered by the latter’s decision to move back to India. By the end of season, even as the two sorted things out between them and Nalini quietly contemplated not going making the shift, we still dint know what the final decision was.

Meanwhile, this could also set the ground for at least a trip to India, even if not a permanent shift!

Is Devi not Nalini’s own child?

In an interesting shift from what’s expected, Devi isn’t throwing a ‘I hate you’ at her dad on the evening he dies. She is saying that to her mother.

By the end of that flashback, we see Devi overhear Nalini say something on the lines of Devi not being Nalini’s child. Once again, while the fall out resolves, there is no final word on whether Devi is adopted or not.

Will Mohan return to haunt Devi?

Heroes vet and The Flash guest star Sendhil Ramamurthy played Devi’s father in the series. His character Mohan had a warm presence throughout the series, despite having passed away even before the series starts.

He often appears to Devi as a figment of her imagination or in flashbacks from her childhood or the memories of Devi’s recital when she drops dead in the audience.

Will Kamala make her own decisions?

Devi’s hot and smart cousin Kamala’s storyline was surprisingly refreshing. Played by the talented Richa Moorjani, Kamala is torn between being an independent young woman and respecting her family’s plans for her life and marriage.

As she is struggling to keep her relationship with fellow Ph.D. student Steve (Eddie Lu) under the covers, she also agrees to an arranged marriage with Prashant (Rushi Kota).

While the story ends in much the same way as it did for Rajesh Koothrapalli (Kunal Nayyar) in the Big Bang Theory Indian, there is a little more imagination to Kamala’s journey to self-determination.

She breaks up with Steve after he pushes her to the edge by obsessing over her arranged marriage scene. But she also dissolves her marriage to Prashant and instead decides to date him considering there is a definite spark. (And because he is hot AF!)

When will Eleanor see her mom again?

More than anything else, Never Have I Ever is an ode to the mother-daughter relationship. And one of the most interesting pairs is that of Eleanor and her mother, Mary.

Mary had walked out on Eleanor to pursue her dreams of Broadway but could only manage to join the crew on a cruise ship.

When she is fired, Mary is forced to return to LA but hides the truth from her daughter out of embarrassment. And when Eleanor is cast as the lead in her school play, (Interestingly, she talks about her mother during the audition), Mary is weirdly inspired [maybe even tad bit jealous] and takes off again.

Never Have I Ever Series

In a marked deviation from the stereotypical high-on-morals and uptight Asian mother, Mary is, in fact, most chill of the lot. And that also makes her the most absent.

How this story ends is something we are excited to find out. Meanwhile, you can always ensure a second season comes out by rewatching the series and asking your friends to binge it with different accounts. Hence, Netflix knows how much we love it.

I am off to a rewatch, see you on the other side!
