Chapter 299 explores Hawks’ (Keigo Takami’s) dark past and family ties. Keigo’s father was a fugitive who got Keigo’s mother pregnant on accident and hated Keigo for being born. As Keigo was born with wings, he was considered a freak by his parents and was not allowed to leave the house or interact with people.

His father barely made enough money to make ends meet and ended up being arrested, leaving Keigo and his mother to fend for themselves. After making a deal with the government, the duo abandoned the Takami name and started leading a new life.

We also find out that the reason Hawks became a hero was that he looked up to Endeavor – the person who arrested his dirtbag father.

The scene shifts to the present, where Hawks is no longer on the verge of life and death. We see him riding in a car driven by Best Jeanist while having a conversation about how they faked Jeanist’s death. Apparently, they used the information they found by researching Nomu to induce a death-like state for Best Jeanist.

Since this whole operation was done in secret, Hawks was able to revive Best Jeanist when the time was right. During their ride, they encounter some low-level villains trying to take over a town because the police are too busy dealing with the prison escapees.

The duo reaches their destination – Keigo’s mom’s residence. Keigo’s mother was the person who leaked information about Hawks to Dabi when she was cornered by men who broke into her house. Keigo’s mother abandoned her residence due to shame and left her son a goodbye note.

Hawks goes on to give a heartfelt monologue about how he is free from his shackles and can understand the pain felt by people like Bubaigawara. The chapter ends as he proclaims that things are different now and how they need to rush to Endeavor’s side despite of the allegations placed on his family by Dabi.

2. Chapter 299 Speculations/Predictions

I. Prison Escapees

Shigaraki successfully broke AFO out of Tartarus in chapter 297. Alongside AFO, several other prisoners made their way out of this maximum-security prison.

With Muscular, Overhaul, and several others breaking free, it is more than likely that they will appear in front of their old nemesis again. This will result in a moment where the students of UA will be able to demonstrate just how much they have grown.

II. Damage Control

Throughout this National sweep for villains, we saw a lot of twists and turns and many nerve-racking battles. With the end of this arc right around the corner, we will start to see the Heroes performing damage control by helping citizens and providing medical aid to everyone who got injured.

It is likely that some characters like Mirko and Endeavor may not make it out alive due to their grave injuries.

III. Endeavor’s Defeat

Chapter 290 revealed that Dabi is actually Touya Todoroki, Endeavor’s eldest son. Just like Shoto, he has been scarred by his father’s expectations and is out for blood.

In his current State, Endeavor is having a hard time breathing so he is at a major disadvantage in this fight

IV. A Brand New Quirk

Chapter 296 showed us Deku awakening yet another quirk passed down from his predecessors. This quirk, known as Danger Sense, is the fourth quirk to manifest inside of Deku’s body.

Undoubtedly, Deku will soon train this quirk to get it under control so that he may use it with ease. A quirk to sense incoming danger will be very helpful in judging scenarios as well as responding to incoming attacks.

5. Chapter 298 Plot

The chapter starts with a small scene where Re-Destro makes a speech about how he has sown the seeds for his definition of genuine freedom.

We then switch to 6 hours after the raid on Tartarus, within a matter of hours, the escapees from Tartarus along with Shigaraki and his men take down seven maximum security prisons causing mayhem all over the place.

AFO is still in control of Shigaraki’s body. After the prison raids, Shigaraki’s comrades ask AFO’s intentions as he isn’t the person they chose to follow.

AFO responds by confirming that he has the same intentions as Shigaraki. For the time being, he decides to let Shigaraki’s body fully recover.

The scene shifts to 2 days later at Central Hospital, where all of the surviving heroes are recovering. We see that Bakugo, Todoroki, and Aizawa are recovering.

Bakugo shows concern for Todoroki and Deku’s well-being internally while acting angry on the outside. Todoroki decides that he will be the one to take on Touya instead of Endeavor. Aizawa and Present Mic talk about their comrades who fell.

The chapter ends with the reveal that Deku is showing no signs of recovery.
