Rudeus breezes through a regular college routine, waking up early to work out and then spending his free time studying. In the afternoon, he takes magic classes and strengthens his basics. Since teleportation is taboo, he finds it challenging to find information on it.

Fitz joins him on his research one day and asks to join him in his investigation. Rudeus asks many questions about his life and starts feeling his heart beating faster around him. He teaches Zanoba how to make figures overnight but finds it impossible.

He asks Fitz for advice and suggests getting a slave to do it instead. Rudeus invites him to the slave market along with Zanoba, and he happily agrees. They make their introductions to each other and wander the town in search of a good slave.

Fitz suggests getting a child who doesn’t know anything since they learn much easier at that age. The slave master brings them to a six-year-old dwarf girl, and Fitz heals her. Rudeus kneels down to her height and tries to get some hope back into her life.

The look in her eyes convinces him she wants to die, and Rudeus agrees to put her out of her misery. Eventually, after some convincing, she decides to give life another try. They give her the name Juliette, or Julie for short.

During the day, Rudeus taught her magic and incantations while she was kept in Zanoba’s care for the rest. He would also teach her about figurines and carving them so that she could get an early headstart in learning the art.
