The Mysterious Medicine Seller Will Be Back in 2024 With Mononoke Movie

What if I told you, hidden deep within the conspicuous quagmire of terrible pacing, egregious fanservice, and the charming power of talk no jutsu, there exists a show so boldly ambiguous, so defiantly subtle, and so unapologetically unique? That show is called Mononoke, absolutely not to be confused with the Ghibli film.

It was a 12-episode series released by Toei Animation in 2007. This anime follows not entirely human Medicine Seller through feudal Japan in his eternal quest to slay Mononoke.

This anime is all set to receive a movie. And here are the details.

The official website for the Mononoke anime film unveiled a new teaser trailer and visual for the film. The trailer reveals the film’s staff and 2024 summer release date.

『劇場版 モノノ怪』特報/2024年 夏 全国ロードショー!

The trailer starts with the voice-over of our mysterious Medicine Seller as he describes how people’s grudges turn into Mononoke when they associate with Ayakashi. And in the Ooku (Women’s Quarters of Edo Castle), the Women’s grudges are the ones that bring in the Ayakashi.

We will get to see the Medicine Seller eliminating the Mononoke from the Ooku, and we will get to know the suffering and troubles of the women from that period.

The teaser visual features our ageless, nameless, and not human Medicine Seller with his talking sword.

The anime was set to release this year but was delayed due to production difficulties. Takahiro Sakurai will no longer reprise the role of Medicine Seller, and Hiroshi Kamiya is the new voice of the protagonist.

While changing the voice cast of the main protagonist might have been a cause of distress for many fans, Hiroshi Kamiya, thankfully, is reliable and a perfect fit for the role.

Kenji Nakamura is returning to direct the Mononoke film. And here’s the list of new staff members.

The anime is underrated, and the movie’s plot sounds exciting. If you haven’t before, please put this on your watchlist and watch the Mononoke series.

About Mononoke

Mononoke is a spinoff series of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales; its anime is produced by Toei. The series premiered with 12 episodes in 2007.

The story features an unnamed and mysterious medicine seller who travels and slays ayakashi. Ayakashi or Mononoke are supernatural spirits who linger in the mortal world and are often born due to negative human emotions.

In the anime, the protagonist appears in places infested by ayakashi and kills them with his sword. His sword allows him to slay the spirits only after he knows their shape, truth, and reasoning.
