For those who have been into science fiction, mecha, and space fantasy, ‘Macross’ is not an unfamiliar franchise. Compared to ‘Transformers’, ‘Gundam’, and ‘Evangelion’, it may have fallen short in popularity, but only relatively.
‘Macross’ added more human elements to the mecha genre, featuring complicated love stories and mesmerizing music. This brought out a whole new flavor to mecha, which was (and sometimes still is) confined to giant robots battling alien forces and protecting the inhabitants.
The event ‘Macross Delta Walküre FINAL LIVE TOUR 2023 ~Last Mission~’ concluded on Sunday with an announcement that a new ‘Macross’ animation project is in production. The project is being handled by Sunrise.
Currently, only the studio name has been revealed, so we will have to wait for further details about the upcoming project.
Bigwest, the advertising agency behind ‘Macross’ announced with Studio Nue and Harmony Gold (producer of Robotech) that they would release most of the anime and merchandise from 1987 and after. They will also collaborate on future Macross and Robotech projects.
The franchise first began in 1982 by Studio Nue with the anime series ‘Super Dimension Fortress Macross.’ It later branched out to several media, including anime films, OVA series, video games, and literary adaptations like manga and novels. In North America, the anime was a part of the Robotech series.
Three sequel anime series were released over time – Macross 7 (1994), Macross Frontier (2008), and Macross Delta (2016). The latest installment, however, is an anime film, ‘Macross Delta the Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!!’, which premiered in October 2021 with the short ‘Macross F ~Time Labyrinth~’.
The release of previous installments sounds like a great way to revive the series worldwide. Fans are happy with Sunrise coming on board but are desperately seeking a fresh story that stays true to its original concept. Since Sunrise also produces Gundam, we can expect a better balance between action and music.
Macross is a science fiction mecha anime created by Studio Nue and Artland in 1982.
The franchise focuses on a fictional history of Earth and humanity. It is set after the year 1999.
The series includes how humans developed technologically as well as the interactions between aliens and humans in the Milky Way.
Earth under a united government, transformer-like where humans can change into jets and space jets, transportation or space folds are some of the common concepts used in Macross.
There are also elements of romance, coming-of-age, nostalgia, culture shock, and capitalism in the show.
