FromSoftware has put a lot of detail into Elden Ring. Players continue discovering new elements in the mythical game. The latest revelation brings into focus the status effect Death Blight, which can instantly kill a player with thorns, and its association with Godwyn.
A new video clip from Elden Ring showed the Death Blight status effect and the murdered demigod Godwyn the Golden.
Elden Ring players are aware of the ruthless storyline for Godwyn. His murderer left his soulless body in an undying state. His corpse now lays at the roots of Erdtree and acts like an infestation, branching vastly across the Lands Between.
The Death Blight status effect is a result of the Prince of Death’s widespread curse, and one should know the story behind the Death Blight’s thorns.
YouTuber @Zullie the Witch’s posted a video showing what the thorns of the Death Blight are actually made of. These are not normal thorns, but rather the white-colored wings of insects. The second body of Godwyn located within the Deeproot Depths has swarms of white-winged insects inside and buzzing around it.
A theory claims that Godywn’s rotting body gives birth to these insects as they are found in the players’ bodies dying of Death Blight.
Zullie pointed out this design element is the implementation of an obsolete concept by FromSoftware called “spontaneous generation,” which asserts that low-lying creatures like maggots and fleas are born out of mud of dead flesh.
Another possible theory is that the worms shooting out of the body when Death Blight consumes a player, are also spontaneously generated from Godwyn’s blight. This implies the Wormfaces’ face worms are related to Godwyn, since Wormface attacks also cause Death Blight.
Insects make up a significant part of Elden Ring. From dragonflies, scarabs, fireflies, butterflies, ants and centipedes, they are everywhere and we only know so much about their true purpose and meaning.
Elden Ring is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
