When you think about zombies, The Walking Dead is the quintessential show that will come to your mind, as it captures the essence of living in an undead world.
The Walking Dead has been on air for so long (nearing 12 years to be precise), that fans expected it would go on for at least a few more seasons. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. So, to answer your query: has The Walking Dead been canceled?
In 2021, AMC announced that The Walking Dead will come to an end after Season 11. So yes, The Walking Dead has been canceled after S11.
While no reasons have been given for the cancelation, dwindling viewership could be one of them. The show was certainly one of the most watched during its peak, but with time, it lost its novelty for casual viewers and only resonated with the more loyal fans.
This news didn’t just shock fans, but also the production team, as the creators and showrunner were not informed in advance.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who plays Negan) indicated that showrunner Angela Kang had already mapped out a Season 11 that would have its story continued in Season 12 and beyond.
This obviously means that Season 11 had to be rewritten to wrap up the show. While it is always sad to see our favorite shows end, it is still a blessing that Season 11 had a 24-episode order that allowed it to have a good ending.
Will The Walking Dead have any more spinoffs?
As of now, three more spinoffs have been announced that will continue after the events of the TWD series finale:
- The Walking Dead: Dead City is a six-episode spinoff that will be centered around Negan and Maggie in Manhattan. The two will make an unlikely alliance in order to achieve a common goal. It will air in 2023.
- Daryl Dixon will be a Daryl-centric spinoff that will be set in France. As per the actor, his character will find himself in zombie-infested France against his will. It will air in 2023.
- There will also be a third spinoff focusing on Rick and Michonne’s relationship. This unnamed project was previously supposed to be released as a movie. However, it will now be a six-episode show scheduled for 2023.
About The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a neo-western horror drama that is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman. It currently stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and others.
Rick Grimes, a sheriff’s deputy, wakes up from a coma to find that the world has just gone through a zombie apocalypse. He soon realizes that the world is divided into the zombies- the ‘walkers’- and a group of survivors who will do anything to survive.
The recent season, that is season 11, will adapt material from issues #175–193 of the comic book series and focuses on the group’s encounter with the Commonwealth, a large network of communities that has advanced equipment and almost fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements.
