After the release of Fire Force Season two episode one, the fans are raving about the improved animation and introduction of a new type of infernal.
However, in the preview of episode 2, we see Shinra going berserk and becoming a devil. When he is under the control of the Adolla Link, he sees a woman resembling Sister Iris.
Why did Shinra see Iris? Is she an enemy?
1. Is Iris the Eighth Pillar?
Iris is a sister originating from The Holy Sol Temple, and a member of the Special Fire Force Company 8.
Unbeknown to her, Iris is the 8th Pillar thanks to the schemes of Sister Sumire. Iris is the Doppelganger of “Amaterasu,” i.e., the First Pillar.
Iris was raised in the Holy Sol Temple alongside Hibana and other sisters. However, what they did not know what that Sister Sumire was conducting experiments on them all along in order to turn them into Pillars.
At the end of her experiments, only Iris and Hibana survived, with the former becoming the Eight Pillar.
Who did Shinra see through the Adolla Link?
When Shinra and Captain Asako, try to meet Captain Hague by visiting the training school, he agrees to meet Shinra alone. Despite having a bad feeling about this meeting, he complies.
Shinra’s suspicions turn out to be accurate as the first thing Captain Hague does is ask Shinra to burn him. This action triggers Kusakabe, who starts hallucinating thanks to the Adolla link.
Through the Adolla Link, Shinra sees a woman who looks exactly like Sister Iris. However, he realizes that the woman is not Iris but the First Pillar, Hitohashi-rame. She tells him to bring an end to all his rage by burning the world. Furthermore, she says that the world is full of lies, and all Shinra needs to do is let his anger explode and kill everyone in front of him.
2. Who is Hitohashirame?
Hitohashirame is the First Pillar, who also serves as the source of energy that powers Amaterasu. Her physical appearance resembles that of Sister Iris.
Soon after the Great Cataclysm, she was found by Yona, who intended to use her Adolla Burst to bloom civilization again. He encased her in a container and delivered her to Raffles Smith’s group leading to them using her as a power source for Amaterasu.
Due to this, Hitohashirame has a deep hatred for humanity.
Hitohashirame and Iris closely resemble each other. Shinra even mistook the former for Iris when he was under the influence of the Adolla Link. It was recently revealed in chapter 200 of the series that Iris is related to the First Pillar. In fact, she is the doppelganger of Hitohashirame.
When she was a child, along with the other sisters in the temple, she was fed bugs from Adolla as part of an experiment conducted by Sister Sumire. Sumire wanted to use the bugs to connect to Adolla and call the Doppelgangers to this realm.
Sister Sumire’s experiments succeeded, and Iris became the doppelganger of the Hitohashirame, along with becoming the Eight Pillar herself.
3. Is Iris evil?
Since Iris is not aware of the fact that she is a doppelganger, it means that she is not consciously evil. The experiments were done on her without consent, and therefore, she did not want to become the Eight Pillar – a pawn of the Evangelist.
However, while Iris is not evil or an enemy at the moment, it is quite possible that there might be a suppressed personality that might be awakened by the Evangelist or her followers that would make her evil.
