A smooth-talking Devil, otherworldly problems and raunchy themes- it is a full package.

I. Plot

Based on the DC comics of the same name, Lucifer, the television show, borrows heavily from Christian mythology and combines it with the classic tropes that make tv shows a hit.

Disenchanted by his life in Hell, Lucifer Morningstar decides to give up his post as the watchman of the netherworld and relocate to Los Angeles, one of the biggest sin cities in the world.

After arriving in Los Angeles, Lucifer opens up an elite nightclub LUX and indulges in all the debauchery Earth has to offer. When a crime happens at Lucifer’s club, Los Angeles Police Department detective Chloe Decker is called to investigate the murder.

Realising that Lucifer has special abilities that will help with the investigation, Chloe reluctantly agrees to let him tag along with her. As the series progresses, the duo becomes adept at solving crimes and, along with forensic scientist Ella Lopez, become an efficient team.

Lucifer becomes intrigued by Chloe since his powers don’t seem to have any influence on her. To attempt to understand humans better, he starts visiting a psychotherapist, Dr. Linda Martin and goes on a journey of self-discovery.

But Lucifer’s supernatural life does not stay away from him. His older brother, the angel Amenadiel, arrives on Earth to ask Lucifer to return to Hell.

When Lucifer refuses, the unguarded demons of Hell come to Earth, wreaking massive destruction in their wake. This forces Lucifer to return to Hell at the end of the fourth season.

The fifth season begins with Chloe, Maze and the rest of the characters feeling Lucifer’s absence in their lives. Naturally, when a person with Lucifer’s face arrives in their midst, they are elated and welcome him with open arms.

They do not notice the telling differences between the real Lucifer and his doppelganger, who is later revealed to be the Devil’s twin brother Michael.

As Michael slowly usurps Lucifer’s life, the characters are drawn into the evil mischief characteristic of the Devil, or, in this case, that of his twin brother’s.

The season finds a good footing with each character being explored more. Dan, Chloe’s ex-husband, has more storylines this season, which reveal layers to his personality.

Season 5 also juggles with the pairing of the characters- at the beginning of the season Chloe and Maze pair up to solve crimes.

Chloe, who had just confessed her feelings for Lucifer last season, and Maze, who followed Lucifer from Hell, both feel cheated by Lucifer for deserting them.

Maze also visits therapist Dr. Martin to deal with her abandonment issues. Lucifer and Ella also team up to help with crime investigation this season.

Even with the different pairings, Chloe and Lucifer’s relationship is the main draw. Despite seeing Lucifer’s real face, Chloe realizes that she loves him.

When Lucifer comes back to the mortal world this season, both try to navigate the ups and downs of having a relationship with a person who is intrinsically different and is from a different plane of existence.

Two of the most important themes in this season are sacrifice and free will. The series artfully plays on the dilemmas in the characters and each episode poses a question that is integral to their discovery of themselves.

II. Characters

Since this season has both Michael and Lucifer, the audience gets to see much more of Tom Ellis, which is always a treat.

Much of the reason why there were so many petitions to save Lucifer after it was cancelled on Fox, is Tom Ellis’ charming portrayal of the sassy but endearing Devil.

In the fifth season, he slips into Michael’s and Lucifer’s skin with such ease that the audience is left wondering whether to dislike Michael because of his devious activities or like him because of Ellis’ acting skills.

Lauren German finds her character in a new state this situation as she finally takes the decision to begin a relationship with Lucifer, which she does perfectly.

Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez is her usual quirky self, which makes her character so fun to watch.

However, the standout act is Lesley Ann-Brandt whose character Maze is a confident woman in all the other seasons except this one.

To deal with her abandonment issues, she portrays a vulnerable woman this season who questions her faith and loyalty towards everyone she loved.

III. Setting and Music

Apart from the Los Angeles cityscape of the present time, this season has a noir episode which was a delight.

It featured the return of a beloved character whom the audience thought they had seen the last of.

The music however is a downgrade from the previous seasons.

5. Final Thoughts

The fifth season of Lucifer delivers a great story and amazing performances and builds on everything that made it great in the first four seasons.

The first half ended in a massive cliffhanger and connected beautifully to the second half. There is a war coming and Lucifer fans cannot wait to see who comes out on the other side.
