Despite all the turmoil created by the Kara, no one really knew what their goal was. The clandestine organization and their leader Jigen have been shrouded in mystery for much of the series.
In a shocking revelation by Amado, Jigen was confirmed to be the vessel of Isshiki Otsutsuki. Before defecting, Amado orchestrated a plan to force Isshiki into reviving himself in Jigen’s body. This would erase the Karma on Kawaki, leaving Isshiki temporarily mortal. With Jigen’s frail body unable to withstand his chakra, Isshiki has only a few days left to live and is desperately after Kawaki to reimplant a Karma on him.
The last time Naruto and Sasuke faced Jigen in battle, Isshiki’s powers were subdued, yet they still only nearly escaped with their lives. Now Isshiki’s back for round two at full strength, ready to retrieve Kawaki by all means!
Isshiki is leagues stronger than Naruto and Sasuke. They only barely managed to defeat Isshiki after Naruto shortened his lifespan using Baryon Mode and Kawaki tricked Isshiki into placing Karma on his shadow clone. Heavy losses accompanied the victory– Sasuke lost the Rinnegan in the fray, and Naruto lost Kurama from using Baryon Mode.
1. How Strong Is Isshiki Really?
Isshiki possesses immense strength, speed, and combat skills. His chakra-absorbing jutsu is difficult to counter. He also unlocked ocular jutsus like Sukunahikona and Daikokuten and the Byakugan after reviving himself.
As an Otsutsuki, Isshiki’s strength is unquestionable. After Kaguya betrayed him, Isshiki was on the verge of death from the damage. Fortunately, he found Jigen nearby and took over his body physically, later placing the Karma on him. While in Jigen’s body, Isshiki could only use his powers to the fullest for a short amount of time, even then placing his body at significant risk since his chakra was too massive for Jigen’s body.
Even so, what gives Isshiki the edge over the shinobi is his immense speed, taijutsu, and, most importantly, his ability to absorb any chakra-based jutsus.
If Isshiki wasn’t already over-powered, once he reincarnated, his ocular jutsus were once again at his disposal. Through his right eye, Isshiki can use the ocular jutsu Sukunahikona to shrink any object– the exception being living objects other than himself. This technique initially required hand gestures, but after reviving himself, Isshiki could use the ability merely by looking at an object.
While Kashin Koji managed to catch Isshiki off-guard earlier and even forced him to reincarnate by summoning non-chakra-based flames, the flames didn’t make a dent on Isshiki once he was revived. He was able to shrink the flames instantly. His right eye also lets him use a technique called Daikokuten, which lets him store objects he has shrunk in another dimension. From here, he can retrieve them at any time and attack with the objects by enlarging them.
Isshiki also possesses the Byakugan in his left eye, which he also couldn’t use while in Jigen’s body. The Byakugan gave him x-ray vision, and he was able to look through the walls while looking for Kawaki at Konoha.
2. How Do Naruto And Sasuke Defeat Him?
Isshiki arrived at Konoha looking for Kawaki and was met by the Hokage. Naruto was taking multiple hits when Sasuke stepped in. In Chapter 49, Sasuke and Boruto took advantage of Sukunahikona’s inability to shrink living objects to catch Isshiki off-guard and teleport him to another dimension. Using a transformation jutsu, Boruto turned into a sword that Sasuke flung at Isshiki, allowing Boruto to get close enough to open the portal.
Sasuke and Naruto followed closely behind, engaging Isshiki in battle. Sasuke tried to use Chidori, but Isshiki was faster and grabbed his arm, blocking the attack and kicking Sasuke aside. Naruto tried to hold Isshiki in place using chakra arms for Sasuke to use Chidori again, but Isshiki evaded the attack by summoning massive black cubes. The cubes blocked Naruto’s ability to sense chakra or detect Sasuke’s and Boruto’s positions.
With Naruto’s clones destroyed and the cubes having separated them, things were looking bleak when Kurama revealed an ace up his sleeve. Using Baryon Mode consumed Naruto and Kurama’s chakra to create new energy, giving Naruto immense chakra and speed. He was able to match Isshiki’s speed, landing multiple hits. With each hit, the energy created by Baryon Mode shortened Isshiki’s lifespan from 20 hours down to 10 minutes.
Naruto and Isshiki moved at such great speed that Sasuke could barely track them with the Sharingan. However, Naruto eventually began to lose chakra and was pinned down.
Through the link between Naruto and Kawaki’s hand running on Naruto’s chakra, Isshiki detected Kawaki and teleported him, instantly pinning him down. Just as Isshiki was about to place the Karma on Kawaki, Sasuke swapped places with Kawaki. Sasuke’s special mineral-based smoke-bomb blocked Isshiki’s Byakugan from finding Kawaki temporarily.
With only a minute or so left before his lifespan ran out, Isshiki baited Kawaki by threatening to kill Naruto. In a stroke of genius, Kawaki created a shadow clone of himself and fooled Isshiki into placing the Karma on the clone before watching the Karma crumble away, followed by his own body seconds later.
3. Is The Threat Of The Otsutsuki Gone?
Even after Isshiki’s death, the threat of the Otsutsuki remains. The remains of Isshiki’s spirit approached Code, another member of the Inner Group of Kara. Isshiki asked Code to avenge him and carry out his will by cultivating the God Tree and obtaining the Chakra fruit. Boruto is also still embedded with Momoshiki’s Karma.
Code is very devoted to Isshiki and is much stronger than him. He even had limiters placed on his scientifically modified body on Isshiki’s command. Code aims to fulfill Isshiki’s final orders and become an Otsutsuki himself. He has his own plans and is accompanied by a powerful accomplice, Eida.
Boruto still has Momoshiki’s Karma on him and loses control whenever he runs out of chakra. According to Isshiki, Boruto’s Otsutsuki-fication was about 80% complete. Following the battle against Isshiki, Momoshiki took over Boruto’s body and stabbed Sasuke in the eye, leading him to lose the Rinnegan.
If the opening scenes of Boruto are any indication, Kawaki will also have a Karma placed on him once again.
