Dungeons and Dragons 2: Release Date, Returning Cast, and More

On March 31, 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – an exciting adventure-fantasy film – hit cinemas worldwide. Within it, we see a quest-seeking combination of a father separated from his daughter, an amusing warrior recovering from a divorce, an insecure sorcerer, and a shape-changing druid.

Will we get another one, though? Let’s find out.

Dungeons and Dragons 2, as of now, is happening thanks to the solid reviews and the fantastic opening of the first one. The first one also perfectly sets up the second. We have to wait for a release date patiently.

Dungeons & Dragons 2 has yet to be confirmed by Paramount and eOne, but if the first movie can follow up its strong reviews with a decent box-office haul, we’d love to return to the Forgotten Realms.

Honor Among Thieves is essentially a self-contained story, so there’s no blatant sequel setup, even in the brilliant mid-credit scene. However, the writing-directing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are keen on another campaign.

“If we’re lucky enough to make another one, I think there are many places to go. We’ve created these great characters who we would love to see where they are in a year or two,” Goldstein said.

When can we expect the Dungeons and Dragons sequel?

As mentioned above, Dungeons & Dragons 2 has yet to be confirmed, so we don’t have an official release date for the sequel.

The first movie was filmed in April-August 2021 and, after a few shifts in release date, was released on March 31, 2023. If a sequel is confirmed and enters production later this year or in early 2024, we could expect it in early 2025.

How does the first movie set up the second one?

No major plot points are left dangling by the first movie that immediately set up Dungeons & Dragons 2.

Edgin (Chris Pine) and his unlikely band of adventurers manage to best both Forge (Hugh Grant) and Red Wizard Sofina (Daisy Head). They even manage to save the citizens of Neverwinter from Sofina’s attempt to turn them all into zombie-enslaved people.

Forge is sent to prison, Edgin reunites with his daughter Kira, and Holga is brought back to life after being fatally wounded in the final battle with Sofina.

Edgin, Holga, Simon, and Doric are all named heroes of the realm by the restored Lord of Neverwinter, and all is well in the Forgotten Realms.

A sequel would likely have to start from scratch to tell a new campaign with this ragtag bunch of heroes, although we wouldn’t rule out a return from Forge to get his revenge against his former allies (who he also turned against, in fairness).

As mentioned before, an eight-episode Dungeons & Dragons series is confirmed for Paramount+. It’s still being determined how this will link (if at all) to the movies, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it set in the same universe.

Cast and Crew for Dungeons and Dragons 2?

Given that Dungeons & Dragons 2 has yet to be confirmed, we don’t have any official cast returns, but we can take a guess.

We’d be surprised if the influential group didn’t return, so that’s Chris Pine as Edgin, Michelle Rodriguez as Holga, Justice Smith as Simon, Sophia Lillis as Doric, and Chloe Coleman as Edgin’s daughter Kira.

Even though he essentially played a supporting role in the first movie, expect to see more of Regé-Jean Page’s super serious paladin Xenk, while Hugh Grant should return as the dastardly Forge.
