Kotoko solves the mystery of Zenta’s doll in episode 7 of In/Spectre season 2, titled “Or You Could Wish Upon a Star.”
With Tae giving her new information on the details of Zenta’s death, as well as the grudge he held against college students responsible for the unfortunate passing of his granddaughter, Kotoko begins piecing things together.
The doll is not merely animated out of a curse or magic, but through the power of an external meteorite and the hatred toward the town that Zenta felt, Kuro has to deal with both using his monstrous powers.

With the end of the story of Zenta’s doll, we will finally see Tae living through life with a different perspective now that all loose ends are tied up. Kotoko and Kuro will likely take up a new client, and their story will begin next episode.
We may continue to see Kuro join Kotoko on her missions since he was instrumental in this one, and they could not have finished their plan without him.

Kotoko explains that while most of her observations make sense, one detail stands out among them all. It can move independently while being a lifeless object; even doing massive damage is entirely new to her.
The old lady reveals a meteorite embedded in it, which could be the answer to her doubts. Zenta was a curious person who immediately found the meteorite and took it to his house upon landing.
Kotoko explains that since many mysterious objects on earth give powers to yokai and other spirits, it is not out of the blue that one could be from the sky too. She remembers that he made the doll to fulfill his wish once he died.
She explains that all they have to do is set a trap for the doll since it takes a very predictable route and blow it up with explosives or some fire ammunition to destroy its very physique.
Kotoko also realizes that since the doll was made to avenge his grandson’s death, maybe destroying it would be a part of his plan and create even more disastrous consequences.
The doll slowly walks towards Kuro, and he dies on the spot but regenerates back up and dodges the next couple of lightning bolts. He needs to destroy the doll carefully to work around the trap.
If he messed up and carelessly destroyed the doll, the college students would probably die. First, Kuro must destroy the curse within the doll and then destroy the doll itself. As the doll finally steps on the marked spot, everybody collapses on it.
They tie its arm up so that it can’t attack anymore, and then Kuro moves to exorcise it of its curse. He finds that Tae’s name is also one among the college students, and he carves off the characters from the dolls.
Zenta was jealous of Tae’s immense wealth too, and couldn’t accept that she could remain so happy even through all the misfortune she went through. The doll’s power was not merely just Zenta’s grudge; but also Tae’s self-loathing as well.

In/Spectre (Kyoko Suiri) is a novel series written by Kyo Shirodaira and illustrated by Hiro Kyohara (Vol. 1) and Chasiba Katase (Vol. 2 onwards). A manga adaptation by Katase has also been serialized since April 2015. The series was adapted into an anime on January 11, 2020, with a second season arriving in 2023.
At the age of 11, Kotoko was kidnapped by youkai who made her an intermediary between the spirits and humans but at the price of her eye and leg.
Now, whenever youkai wish for their problems to be solved, they make their way to Kotoko for consultation. She is joined by Kuro, whom she falls for and may have a mysterious power hidden inside him.
