How to find and catch Sandy Shocks in Pokemon Scarlet? Full Guide

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced a new group of Pokemon called Paradox Pokemon, also known as the Enigmas of Paldea. In Pokemon Scarlet, Paradox Pokemon resemble ancient relatives of modern-day ‘mons, while in Pokemon Violet, they look like futuristic versions of them.

Sandy Shocks in Pokemon Scarlet is one such Paradox Pokemon, who is an ancient relative of Magneton, who itself evolved from Magnemite.

This Electric-Ground type is notoriously hard to locate, so if you’ve been searching for Sandy Shocks, I can help you out.

You can find Pokemon Scarlet’s Sandy Shocks at Research Station 2, Area Zero. Sandy Shocks can spawn in 3 locations: alongside the rocky terrain on the left, on top of the rocky mound, or even right outside the gate. Sandy Shocks can also be found outside Research Station 1.

Note: You need to have completed the main storyline to be able to find and catch Sandy Shocks. Zero Gate is a post-game exclusive and can only be accessed once you’ve gotten past the credits.

Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Sandy Shocks

1. Head to the Great Crater of Paldea

The Palden Great Crater is where all the Paradox Pokemon can be found. Go to your map (after you’ve finished the main storyline) and on Zero Gate.

2. Go to Area Zero

Enter Area Zero and run straight to the portal. Either tap on Research Station 1 or 2, when the portal asks you where you want to go.

3. Go to Research Station 1 or 2

Sandy Shocks spawns outside both, Research Station 1 and 2, but Research Station 2 is somewhat more reliable.

I. Research Station 1

Some players have noted a Sandy Shocks right outside the gate of Research Station 1. If it isn’t there, try going right as soon as you leave the lab. There should be one in the grassy area near the trees.

There’s also a rocky patch nearby, where Sandy Shock spawns.

II. Research Station 2

Take a left after you come out of the lab. Go near the rocky mound (this is actually the same mound that you came down from at one point in the game).

You can roam around in the general vicinity of the rocky terrain and wait for a Sandy Shocks to spawn at the bottom, or climb up the hill using Koraidon/Miraidon.

There will be plenty of Sandy Shocks on top of, in the middle, or the bottom of the rocky dirt-scape mountain.

How to catch Sandy Shocks? Why isn’t Sandy Shocks in the location?

Sandy Shocks is a rare spawn so it takes some time to find. You have to be active in the area repeatedly for it to appear. Most players take about 2-5 minutes waiting for Sandy Shocks to spawn.

Try going back and forth from the entrance of Research Station 2 to the rocky terrain. You can also go up and down the hill/mound – Sandy Shocks will spawn up, down, and in the middle of the hill.

Alternatively, leave the Research Station, and try coming back.

Best way to initiate spawning is by enabling the Auto Battle feature to engage in battle with other Pokemon in the area. Post that, you should be able to see some Sandy Shocks spawning at your location.

Once one Sandy Shocks spawns, several are going to appear in the area. So if you kill or drive away a wild Sandy Shocks during battle, there will be others you can catch.

Sandy Shocks has a very low catch rate of 8.8% so you will likely have to try a couple of times before you catch one.

Most wild Sandy Shocks are Level 50 and above – so make sure your Pokemon are about that level. Use a Water type Pokemon for a better chance to catch Sandy Shocks since it is weak to water-based attacks.

Can I catch a Shiny Sandy Shocks?

Shiny Sandy Shocks can also be found in the same locations as regular Sandy Shocks. However, Shiny Sandy Shocks have an even lower spawn rate than regular Sandy Shocks, so you have to be really patient if you want the Shiny form of this Paradox Pokemon.

Use the Shiny Sandwich recipes to boost the spawn rate of Shiny Pokemon.

Sandy Shocks is a Pokemon Scarlet exclusive. You can trade your Iron Thorns, which is the equivalent Pokemon Violet excusive by using the online trading feature.

This can be done by tapping the Poke Portal and going on Link Trade. Put your input code into the slot and the game will search for a trade partner for you.

This also works the other way around – you can trade your Sandy Shocks to get Iron Thorns, if your objective is to complete your Pokedex.
