Hoops Axed by Netflix, No Second Season for Show

It seems like the Hoops TV show has not scored with the viewers – Netflix will not renew the adult animation series after its first season. Created by singer and comedian Ben Hoffman, the first season of the show premiered in August 2020 to lukewarm reviews. It stars Jake Johnson, Ron Funches, Cleo King, Natasha Leggero, A.D Miles, and Rob Riggle, among others.

Hoops focuses on Ben Hopkins, a vulgar and temperamental high school basketball coach, who believes that if he can turn around his lousy team, he will be promoted to the ‘big leagues’ and will be able to turn his life around.

His father, Barry, was a legendary basketball player and is now the owner of the Hopkins Steakhouse. His best friend, Ron, is the assistant basketball coach and is dating his estranged wife, Shannon.

While many praised the show for its humor, its over-the-top profanity did not sit well with many others. Of all the new shows on Netflix, Hoops became one of the only shows to receive such mixed reviews after the first, with some calling it “unwatchable” and the others hailing it to be one of the funniest adult comedies in the past year.

Although Netflix does not reveal its viewership statistics, it has been reported that not many people watched the first season. The wide gap between the number of viewers versus the cost of the production of the second season is the primary reason behind the cancellation.

There has been no news of Hoops being picked up by other streaming platforms at the time of writing this article.
