Haruhi Suzumiya light novel franchise changed the face of the book industry in Japan when it was first published in 2003; since then, the series helped redefine anime around the world with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya TV anime series from Kyoto Animation, putting the now-beloved studio on the map, and helping bring many people into the anime fandom.

Kyon is a student at North High School in Nishinomiya. He is dragged along by his classmate, the titular Haruhi Suzumiya, an eccentric schoolgirl who seeks supernatural phenomena and figures, such as aliens, time travellers, and espers.

Haruhi is unaware that she possesses destructive reality-warping powers.

Together with Kyon, the others work to keep life interesting for Haruhi and prevent her from becoming bored enough to imagine a new world. Their organizations fear that this would destroy the current world.

This time the story picks up where 2011’s The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya left off.

After the anime adaptation airing in 2006, publishing company Kadokawa Shoten received offers for licensing the novels and their adaptations.

The novels are licensed for English language release in the United States by Little, Brown, and Company, for young readers by Yen Press.

The anime adaptation was licensed for North American distribution by Kadokawa Pictures USA division, which then sublicensed production and distribution to Bandai Entertainment.

Funimation currently licenses the anime. An English release for the final volume hasn’t been announced yet. Stay tuned for more updates!

About The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Kyon considers himself to be an average high school student. Although he is bored with his mundane life, he does absolutely nothing to change it.

However, his regular life goes mayhem when he meets an overly eccentric girl, Haruhi Suzumiya. While introducing herself to Kyon, she states that she would only talk to aliens, time travelers, and espers.

Like Kyon, Haruhi is also extremely bored with her life. Still, tires to engage herself every possible club but find nothing worth her time.

Inspired by Kyon’s idea, Haruhi forms her club, the SOS Brigade, specializing in all things supernatural.

Unknowingly, Haruhi creates things and people that take her and Kyon on a fantastic adventure.

In this adventure, they meet new friends and get tangled into a weird mess where they must work together to turn everything back to normal.
