Free new update drops for Baldur’s Gate 3 addressing many issues

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a very ambitious game that made it out of the beta phase after three years and was released recently. However, for a game of its magnitude, it is expected that there will be minor bugs here and there that need to be polished out.

After rolling back the Hotfix 4, Baldur’s Gate 3 developers Larian Studios have re-released the fixed Hotfix 4, previously failing because of specific compiler issues that caused crashes. The developers addressed the issue and apologized in the patch announcement on Steam.

The developers mentioned that rolling back the hotfix was an internal choice, and it was chosen to limit the exposure of the buggy hotfix.

The developers apologized and acknowledged their oversight. They clarified that even though Hotfix 4 went through a “rigorous QA pipeline” and was slated for release, there were mistakes.

However, they triggered a version rebuild very close to release and could not change the version number. This caused the “cooked version” to be plagued by compiler corruption, leading to crashes.

The crashes were caused by certain exceptions that generally do not cause crashes. This is why it was overlooked. Larian Studios admitted that compiler issues of this kind are “extremely rare,” and they “weren’t prepared for it.”

Since it happened past midnight in Europe, it became a little more challenging for them to resolve the issue right away as Larian Studio teams from Canada and Malaysia had to work to diagnose it.

Larian Studios assured that moving forward, they will ensure that any change made to future versions, regardless of its impact, “will always go through their complete and comprehensive QA pipeline.”

This includes an in-house QA team, automated testing, unit tests, and save-game compatibility testing to ensure they cover all the edge cases. Such prompt reply on the developers’ part has pleased Baldur’s Gate 3’s community.
