Thorfinn and Gudrid: The Unexpected Romance in Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga is full of action-packed battles and intense moments. While I have no complaints about that, some of us do stop and wonder if Thorfinn will ever have a love interest.

The series mainly focuses on Thorfinn’s journey to avenge his father, it’s no secret that there are hints of romance along the way. More importantly, our not-so-perfect protagonist does find himself strangely attracted to someone. Let me tell you what happens next.

Thorfinn’s wife, Gudrid, is his only love interest in the Vinland Saga. She fled from an arranged marriage and joined Thorfinn on his journey to Vinland. Their romance started with Gudrid’s confession in chapter 160 of the manga. They end up getting married after the timeskip.

While Vinland Saga may be primarily centered around Thorfinn’s quest for revenge, the little moments of romance between Thorfinn and Gudrid steal the show.

The development of their relationship is a testament to the idea that people can find love in even the most unexpected places and amidst the most challenging circumstances.

Who is Gudrid in Vinland Saga?

Gudrid was a widow forced into a second marriage with a man she never chose. Unlike the other women of her time, she prioritized her freedom and wasn’t ready to settle into a domestic life with someone she didn’t love. She refused to be tied down and decided to join Thorfinn and his friends on their journey to the East.

She sets off on the Eastern Expedition with Thorfinn and his friends, but her former husband, Sigurd, wasn’t about to let her go without a fight!

Gudrid was introduced in chapter 101 at the beginning of the Eastern Expedition arc, which comes right after the Ketil Farm / Slave arc. Unfortunately, this means the anime viewers will have to wait until season 3 or 4 before meeting Thorfinn’s future wife.

In the final chapter of the Eastern Expedition Arc titled “Wedding,” Thorfinn finally introduces his beloved wife and child to the people of Iceland. To commemorate the special occasion of their union, they held a grand banquet for the wedding.

During the timeskip, Thorfinn and Gudrid’s love blossomed enough that they vowed to be together forever. On their journey to the East, they decided to make it official and tied the knot. They welcomed Karli into their family, making him their adopted son.

Does Thorfin have children?

Thorfin stumbled upon Karli in the ruins of his home, guarded by his mother, who was close to death. Karli is the son of Arngrim, an acquaintance of Lief’s. Sadly, Karli’s mother passed away after the Vikings allied with Gisli and launched an attack against Arngrim. Thorfinn and his crew took him with them on their voyage to Miklagard, intending to find him a new home.

Little did they know Karli’s presence on the journey would bring them so much joy – he quickly grew to be an integral part of the crew. Thorfinn and Gudrid, swept away by their love for the boy, decided to adopt him as their son.

In a recent chapter, the revelation of Gudrid’s pregnancy has set the stage for the arrival of another child. The story will probably unfold similarly to its historical roots, and Gudrid will give birth to Snorri.
