As an ongoing series with more than 148 episodes, Hunter x Hunter has an expansive roster of characters and isn’t afraid to kill off a few, or many, in this case.
Hunter x Hunter enjoys an unseen amount of popularity despite the long continuous hiatus, and with good reason. With a brilliant plot and fascinating characters, the series never ceases to entertain.
While the first episode promises us an adventure like no other, it isn’t as happy-go-lucky as it sounds. From catching a fish to appearing for a hunter exam, to fighting for survival, all in order to find his father, Gon has done it all. Like any other shonen, Hunter x Hunter promises great fights as well as loss and pain.
Here’s a list of all the characters that die in Hunter x Hunter. Please keep in mind that this article will contain extensive spoilers, and with that said, let’s get started.
1. List of Characters Who Die in Hunter X Hunter
- Rabid Dog
- Ten Dons
- Shacmono Tocino
- Reina and Kurt
- The Ant Queen Ant
- Isaac Netero
2. How Did Kite Die?
Kite died as a result of fighting Neferpitou, the Chimera Ant King’s Royal Guard. He sacrificed himself by occupying her attention, allowing Gon and Killua to escape. After his death, Kite was reborn as a Chimera Ant and retained all of his memories.
Kite was Ging’s apprentice, and Kite had set out to find and suppress the Chimera Ant Queen in the Neo-Green Life (NGL) Autonomous State. After arriving and receiving Ponzu’s message, he made his way to this nest alongside Gon and Killua. Unfortunately, they were faced with Neferpitou, one of Meruem’s royal guards, and had their escape cut off.
In order to allow Gon and Killua to escape, Kite took on Neferpitou all by himself and was killed. After his death, Kite was reborn as a Chimera Ant and Meruem’s twin and regained his memories as a human after growing up.
3. Isaac Netero’s Death
Netero was the Chairman of the Hunter Association and one of the most powerful hunters in the series. He died after piercing his own heart in order to detonate the Rose bomb and kill the Chimera Ant King, Meruem.
While facing Meruem, Netero wasn’t able to come out on top and was bested by his opponent several times. Furthermore, Meruem evolved and absorbed knowledge while fighting, leaving Netero no choice but to exchange his own life to end the Chimera Ant King’s reign of terror.
In his last moments, Netero claimed that Meruem knew nothing about humanity and proceeded to pierce his own heart, thus detonating the Rose.
4. The Death of Chimera Ant King’s Royal Guards
The Chimera Ant King’s Royal Guards were extraordinarily loyal and were willing to give up their lives for his sake. All three of the guards, Neferpitou, Shaiapouf, and Menthuthuyoupi, died in the end due to different reasons.
Neferpitou was killed by Gon after he discovered that they could not revive Kite. In order to exact revenge, Gon did not hesitate to extinguish all of his future potential and rapidly grew to an age where he could defeat Pitou.
On the other hand, both Youpi and Pouf died after being poisoned by the Miniature Rose after saving Meruem from the blast.
5. Meruem & Komugi’s Death
Meruem and Komugi died after being poisoned through the Rose bomb detonated by Netero.
When fighting against Netero, Meruem had the upper hand and seemed relatively laid back.
However, to show him the tenacity of humans, Netero pierced his own heart and detonated the Rose bomb, seriously maiming the Chimera Ant King. While Meruem survived the attack by consuming Shaiapouf and Menthuthuyoupi, he was lethally poisoned by the bomb.
Meruem later died alongside Komugi, the innocent civilian who willingly gave up her life in exchange for playing Gungi with him in their last moments.
6. How Many Phantom Troupe Members Are Dead?
The Phantom Troupe, headed by Chrollo Lucifer, consists of 13 members, out of whom four have already died.
Two members of the troupe, Shalnark, and Kortopi, were killed by Hisoka after he had just revived and stood no chance of survival.
The other two members, Uvogin and Pakunoda, were killed by Kurapika’s Judgement Chain because of his grudge against the Phantom Troupe for annihilating the Kurta Clan.
7. Is Hisoka Dead?
Hisoka died after fighting a death match against Chrollo at the Heavens Arena. The Phantom Troupe leader used multiple explosive puppets to blast and kill Hisoka, who was already handicapped by the former.
After his death, Shalnark explained that Hisoka used a large portion of the puppets as a “meat shield,” which both protected him from the bulk of the explosion but also suffocated him.
While Hisoka can be considered to have died once, he ultimately ended up reviving through his nen ability. When Machi attempted to stitch him up, his aura re-emerged from his body. It turns out that before dying, Hisoka had instructed his nen to use Bungee Gum to restart his heart and lungs after his demise.
If a person has a strong will, their nen will not disperse for a while after death. Likewise, due to Hisoka’s intense desire to live, his nen did not disperse and followed his instructions, resulting in his miraculous revival.
