Disney’s ‘Doctor Who’ Deal Breaks a Long-Standing Tradition for the Better

Summary:

  • ‘Doctor Who’ 60th anniversary special brings a change to their 60-year tradition. The episodes will now be available on one streaming platform following the Disney deal.
  • ‘Doctor Who’’s future episodes will feature much better VFX and set design as the Disney deal gives them a massive budget.

The ‘Doctor Who’ 60th anniversary special brings about a massive change to their 60-year tradition because of their agreement with Disney.

The veteran BBC series focuses on a Gallifreyan Time Lord called ‘Doctor Who’ and his travels back and forth in time as he embarks on various adventures with his companions. The series became popular worldwide after Russell T. Davies rebooted the show in 2005 and expanded its fanbase outside the UK.

Despite the show’s massive popularity, watching ‘Doctor Who’ outside the UK has always been difficult. The show kept shifting between streaming platforms, making it difficult for viewers to catch up with the show.

Finally, Disney acquired the rights to stream future episodes of ‘Doctor Who’ exclusively on Disney+ starting November 2023. This change impacts the series in a positive way and makes it easily accessible to a wider audience.

There are several other changes that impact the series after the Disney deal. ‘Doctor Who’ has always been slightly behind in the technology department because of a limited budget. But the Disney deal has changed the VFX game for ‘Doctor Who’, and the 60th anniversary special proves it.

The 60th-anniversary special features much better sets, visual effects, and VFX compared to ‘Doctor Who”s usual episodes. The show also looks more modern, colorful, and vibrant.

‘Doctor Who’ episodes from Davies’ era were great in storytelling, but the cheap visuals could not do justice to the show’s vast universe. In season 1, episode 7, titled “Dalek,” the gunshots are poorly done, and the electrocutions look unreal and out of place. Disney coming into the picture changes the technology game for the series.

‘Doctor Who’s small budget also prevented its showrunners from doing everything they wanted in the series. They could not get creative with their ideas. However, a good budget will decrease the need to think outside the box.

Previously, the production team had to come up with innovative ways to give visual expression to their ideas but with Disney’s support, the team will be able to do justice to their vision.

We’ll wait and watch how this new tradition turns out for ‘Doctor Who’!

Got the rare talent to binge an entire show in a single sitting just like that. Although a sucker for psychological thrillers, no bias for any genre when it comes to a good story. A living proof that Netflix and chill is not a myth!
